Galectin-3 (Gal-3) is a β-galactoside-binding lectin expressed in cells of the placental microenvironment. This lectin is involved in various biological processes, such as modulation of the immune system and control of parasitic illness. infection can lead to congenital transmission and cause miscarriages, prematurity and fetal anomalies.

Congenital Chagas disease (CCD) is a worldwide neglected problem with significant treatment limitations. This study aimed to evaluate the potential of Copaifera spp. oleoresins (ORs) against Trypanosoma cruzi infection in trophoblast cells (BeWo lineage) and human chorionic villous explants (HCVE).

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is considered the leading cause of dementia in the elderly worldwide. It results in progressive memory loss and impairment of cognitive and motor skills, leading to a high degree of disability and dependence. The development of AD is associated with the accumulation of senile plaques in the brain, caused by the amyloidogenic pathway of the disease.

Introduction: is the etiologic agent of toxoplasmosis, a disease that affects about one-third of the human population. Most infected individuals are asymptomatic, but severe cases can occur such as in congenital transmission, which can be aggravated in individuals infected with other pathogens, such as HIV-positive pregnant women. However, it is unknown whether infection by other pathogens, such as , the etiologic agent of Chagas disease, as well as one of its proteins, P21, could aggravate infection.

Background: Continuous invasive monitoring of intracranial pressure (ICP) is essential in neurocritical care for surveillance and management of raised ICP. Fluid-based systems and strain gauge microsensors remain the current standard. In the past few decades, several studies with wireless monitoring were developed aiming to reduce invasiveness and complications.

Following the increase in the employment of women in conflicts around the world, the federal government of Brazil enacted a law which determines the participation of women in the military. The aim of this study was to analyze the effect of six months of physical training (PT) on the physical fitness of young Brazilian Army cadets to carry out the physical assessments provided in military training. Sixty-eight members of the (19.

Background: Different methods of cranioplasty for the reconstruction of bony skull defects exist. In the absence of the autologous bone flap, a customised manufactured implant may be the optimal choice, but this implant has several limitations regarding its technical standardisation and better cost-effectiveness.

Methods: This study presents a series of 16 consecutive patients who had undergone cranioplasty with customised three-dimensional (3D) template moulds for polymethylmethacrylate (PMMA) implants manufactured after 3D modelling on a specific workstation.

It is well known that body composition can influence peripheral heat loss and skin temperature. That the distribution of body fat is affected by gender is well known; however, there is little information on how body composition and gender influences the measure of skin temperature. This study evaluated skin temperature distribution according to body fat percentage (BF%) and gender.

Background: Most individuals diagnosed with diabetes mellitus (about 90%) have type 2 disease (T2DM). T2DM is associated with a high genetic predisposition and is characterized by changes in the secretion and action of insulin. There have been reports of increased activity of the adenosine deaminase enzyme in individuals with coronary heart disease and DM.

Background: Gastric bypass is a widespread bariatric procedure that carries a high incidence of gallstone formation postoperatively. Controversy exists regarding the importance and consequences of gallstones in these patients. There are surgeons who consider gallstone-related complications after gastric bypass important enough to require routine removal of the gallbladder during gastric bypass (prophylactic cholecystectomy).

Introduction: Enterocromaffin-like cells (ECL) are specialized endocrine gastric cells able to release histamine, which in turn controls gastric acid production by parietal cells. Helicobacter pylori infection and other conditions signal in the gastrointestinal tract via Toll-like receptors (TLRs) and modify gastric acid production, but there is no evidence of expression and function of TLRs in ECL cells. In this work, we analyzed gene and protein expression of TLR-2, 4, 5, and 9, and other molecules involved in TLR signaling in ECL cells.

Dendritic cells (DCs)-based vaccine was demonstrated to increase HIV specific cellular immune response; however, in some HIV-infected patients, the response to the vaccine resulted to be not effective. In order to understand if the outcome of the vaccination may be influenced by the host's genome and natural immunity, we studied the innate immune genome of HIV-infected patients previously vaccinated with DCs. We identified 15 SNPs potentially associated with the response to the immuno-treatment and two SNPs significantly associated with the modulation of the response to the DC vaccine: MBL2 rs10824792 and NOS1 rs693534.

Introduction: The Brazilian variant of human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) type 1 (HIV-1) subtype B (serotype B'-GWGR) has a tryptophan replacing a proline in position 328 of the HIV-1 envelope, a feature that may induce a different HIV disease progression. We aimed to evaluate the role of the B subtypes of HIV-1 (serotypes B-GPGR and B'-GWGR) on HIV disease progression.

Methods: A total of 137 HIV-infected individuals who had been admitted to the hospital were tested with an anti-V3 serologic assay, using peptides representing 2 HIV-1 subtype B strains, MN and SF2, and 2 Brazilian variant B'-GWGR strains, BR1 and BR2.
