Microbiome and Resistome Studies of the Lithuanian Baltic Sea Coast and the Curonian Lagoon Waters and Sediments.

Background: the widespread use of antibiotics in human and veterinary medicine has contributed to the global challenge of antimicrobial resistance, posing significant environmental and public health risks.

Objectives: this study aimed to examine the microbiome and resistome dynamics across a salinity gradient, analyzing water and sediment samples from the Baltic Sea coast and the Curonian Lagoon between 2017 and 2023.

Methods: the composition of the water and sediment bacterial community was determined by Full-Length Amplicon Metagenomics Sequencing, while ARG detection and quantification were performed using the SmartChipTM Real-Time PCR system.

[Pain, analgesic consumption and daily life activities recovery in patients undergoing ambulatory totally extra-peritoneal laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty versus ambulatory Lichtenstein hernioplasty].

Introduction: Although the unique comparison standard of primary inguinal hernia repair is the Lichtenstein technique (LICH), totally extra-peritoneal (TEP) laparoscopic inguinal hernioplasty shows, although not systematically demonstrated, clear advantages as regards, perceived pain, analgesic use, and recovery of daily life activities.

Objective: To demonstrate the differences in perceived pain, analgesic use, and recovery of daily life activities between Lichtenstein hernioplasty and TEP laparoscopy.

Material And Methods: A prospective, non-randomised observational study was conducted on 169 consecutive patients subjected to LICH vs TEP.

Domestic violence surveillance system: a model.

Objective: To develop a domestic violence surveillance system.

Material And Methods: The strategies included implementation of a standard digitalized reporting and analysis system along with advocacy with community decision makers, strengthening inter-institutional attention networks, consultation for constructing internal flow charts, sensitizing and training network teams in charge of providing health care in cases of domestic violence and supporting improved public policy prevention initiatives.

Results: A total of 6 893 cases were observed using 2004 and 2005 surveillance system data.

[Epidemiology of homicides in Cali, Colombia, 1993-1998: six years of a population-based model].

Objectives: To demonstrate the usefulness of an effective and timely information model, underscore the seriousness of the problem of homicides, and point out the need to apply this type of model as well as comprehensive prevention projects, such as Desarrollo, Seguridad y Paz (DESESPAZ). From 1993 to 1998, 11 457 homicides were registered in Cali, Colombia, through an epidemiological surveillance model established under DESESPAZ by the mayor's office in Cali.

Methods: Beginning in January 1993, a work group organized by DESESPAZ reviewed and standardized the variables that different institutions gathered about the victims, their assailants, and the facts surrounding each case, and issued a weekly summary bulletin for the mayor and other local authorities.

The learning curve in ambulatory laparoscopic cholecystectomy.

Whether laparoscopic cholecystectomy (LC) should be performed as an outpatient procedure is still under discussion. The aim of this study was to evaluate the influence of surgeon's experience in ambulatory management of LC. Three hundred eighty-one consecutive elective LCs were planned as outpatient procedures.

Identification of novel cryptic translocations involving IGH in B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphomas.

Chromosomal rearrangements involving the immunoglobulin heavy chain gene (IGH) at 14q32 are observed in approximately 50% of patients with B-cell non-Hodgkin's lymphoma (NHL). The 5' end of the IGH gene is located within 8 kb of the telomeric repeats of 14q. Translocations involving the IGH locus and the telomeric band of a partner chromosome are difficult to identify, because most terminal bands of human chromosomes appear pale by conventional G-banding techniques.

Identification of unstable sequences within the common fragile site at 3p14.2: implications for the mechanism of deletions within fragile histidine triad gene/common fragile site at 3p14.2 in tumors.

The FRA3B, at 3p14.2, lies within the fragile histidine triad (FHIT) gene and is the most highly expressed of the common fragile sites observed when DNA replication is perturbed by aphidicolin. Common fragile sites are highly unstable regions of the genome.

ERK8, a new member of the mitogen-activated protein kinase family.

The ERKs are a subfamily of the MAPKs that have been implicated in cell growth and differentiation. By using the rat ERK7 cDNA to screen a human multiple tissue cDNA library, we identified a new member of the ERK family, ERK8, that shares 69% amino acid sequence identity with ERK7. Northern analysis demonstrates that ERK8 is present in a number of tissues with maximal expression in the lung and kidney.
