In this work we propose a data-driven age-structured census-based SIRD-like epidemiological model capable of forecasting the spread of COVID-19 in Brazil. We model the current scenario of closed schools and universities, social distancing of people above sixty years old and voluntary home quarantine to show that it is still not enough to protect the health system by explicitly computing the demand for hospital intensive care units. We also show that an urgent intense quarantine might be the only solution to avoid the collapse of the health system and, consequently, to minimize the quantity of deaths.

Steady technological advances are paving the way for the implementation of the quantum internet, a network of locations interconnected by quantum channels. Here we propose a model to simulate a quantum internet based on optical fibers and employ network-theory techniques to characterize the statistical properties of the photonic networks it generates. Our model predicts a continuous phase transition between a disconnected and a highly connected phase and that the typical photonic networks do not present the small world property.

The launch of a satellite capable of distributing entanglement through long distances and the first loophole-free violation of Bell inequalities are milestones indicating a clear path for the establishment of quantum networks. The first generation of multiqubit quantum technologies will consist of noisy, intermediate-scale devices for which active error correction remains out of reach. To exploit such devices, it is thus imperative to use passive error protection that meets a careful trade-off between noise protection and resource overhead. We present a method that allows the study of classical and quantum correlations in networks with causally independent parties, such as the scenario underlying entanglement swapping. By imposing relaxations of factorization constraints in a form compatible with semidefinite programing, it enables the use of the Navascués-Pironio-Acín hierarchy in complex quantum networks. The present work investigates the effect of chlorine stress on the subsequent growth behavior of individual Salmonella cells. A time-lapse microscopy method was used which allowed to evaluate the effect of chlorine on the division times of Salmonella individual cells and the percentage of cells able to divide after the treatment.
