Current statistical models to simulate pandemics miss the most relevant information about the close atomic interactions between individuals which is the key aspect of virus spread. Thus, they lack a proper visualization of such interactions and their impact on virus spread. In the field of computer graphics, and more specifically in computer animation, there have been many crowd simulation models to populate virtual environments.

The outcome of fascial plane blocks (FPBs) has a certain variability that may depend on many factors, which can be divided into three main categories: operator-related, patient-related and drug-related. Operator-related factors include personal skills, choice of needle and injection modalities. Patient variables include anthropometric features, the type of targeted fascia, anatomical variants, patient positioning, muscle tone and breathing.

Background: Inconsistent nomenclature and anatomical descriptions of regional anesthetic techniques hinder scientific communication and engender confusion; this in turn has implications for research, education and clinical implementation of regional anesthesia. Having produced standardized nomenclature for abdominal wall, paraspinal and chest wall regional anesthetic techniques, we aimed to similarly do so for upper and lower limb peripheral nerve blocks.

Methods: We performed a three-round Delphi international consensus study to generate standardized names and anatomical descriptions of upper and lower limb regional anesthetic techniques.

We present a case study on a journey about a personal data collection of carnivorous plant species habitats, and the resulting scientific exploration of location data biases, data errors, location hiding, and data plausibility. While initially driven by personal interest, our work led to the analysis and development of various means for visualizing threats to insight from geo-tagged social media data. In the course of this endeavor we analyzed local and global geographic distributions and their inaccuracies.

Background: There is heterogeneity in the names and anatomical descriptions of regional anesthetic techniques. This may have adverse consequences on education, research, and implementation into clinical practice. We aimed to produce standardized nomenclature for abdominal wall, paraspinal, and chest wall regional anesthetic techniques.

Background: There are various approaches to perform an ultrasound guided Quadratus Lumborum Block (QLB). The lateral, posterior, anterior or trans muscular and subcostal paramedian are the various approaches described for performing a QLB. Each of these blocks are aimed to achieve a maximum spread with high volume and low concentration of local anesthetics.

The aim of this study was to assess the association between IRF6 single nucleotide polymorphisms and nonsyndromic cleft lip, with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P), in a Chilean population, based on a case-control sample and confirmed in a case-parent trio population. In a sample of 150 Chilean case-parent trios and 164 controls (cohort 1), we evaluated the association between three common IRF6 variants (rs764093, rs2236909, rs2235375) and NSCL/P using odds ratio (OR) for case-control and case-parent trios and in a combined OR of both designs. To confirm associations from the cohort 1, we increased the sample size to 215 triads and 320 controls (cohort 1 + cohort 2).

Since the original description in 2011, the array of pectoral nerve blocks has evolved. The pectoral nerve (PECS) block in conjunction with general anesthesia can decrease an additional analgesic in perioperative period for breast cancer surgeries. Current literature on the PECS block has reported 3 several types (PECS I, PECS II, and serratus plane blocks).

Non-syndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCL/P) is the most common craniofacial birth defect in humans, the etiology of which can be dependent on the interactions of multiple genes. We previously reported haplotype associations for polymorphic variants of interferon regulatory factor 6 (IRF6), msh homeobox 1 (MSX1), bone morphogenetic protein 4 (BMP4), and transforming growth factor beta 3 (TGFB3) in Chile. Here, we analyzed the haplotype-based gene-gene interaction for markers of these genes and NSCL/P risk in the Chilean population.

Background And Objectives: Effective postoperative analgesia after cesarean delivery enhances early recovery, ambulation, and breastfeeding. In a previous study, we established the effectiveness of the quadratus lumborum block in providing pain relief after cesarean delivery compared with patient-controlled analgesia (morphine). In the current study, we hypothesized that this method would be equal to or better than the transversus abdominis plane block with regard to pain relief and its duration of action after cesarean delivery.

Background: Effective postoperative analgesia after caesarean section is important because it enables early ambulation and facilitates breast-feeding. Several case reports have shown that local anaesthetic injection around the quadratus lumborum muscle is effective in providing pain relief after various abdominal operations and in patients with chronic pain. The quadratus lumborum block (QLB) is performed in close proximity to the surface and uses a fascial compartment path to extend the distribution of local anaesthesia into the posterior abdominal wall and paravertebral space.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to assess the prevalence of PALB2 mutations in Chilean families with breast cancer (BC), as its role in South American populations was previously unknown.
  • Researchers analyzed 100 Chilean individuals with negative BRCA1/2 results, using advanced genetic testing techniques, and compared findings with a larger group of BC cases and controls.
  • Although no pathogenic mutations were found, two specific PALB2 variants showed a significant association with an increased risk of BC, particularly in individuals with a strong family history of the disease.

Recent Genome-Wide Association Studies have identified several single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) associated with breast cancer (BC) among women of Asian, European, and African-American ancestry. Nevertheless, the contribution of these variants in the South American population is unknown. Furthermore, there is little information about the effect of these risk alleles in women with early BC diagnosis.

Genome-Wide Association Studies have identified several loci associated with breast cancer (BC) in populations of different ethnic origins. One of the strongest associations was found in the FGFR2 gene, and MAP3K1 has been proposed as a low-penetrance BC risk factor. In this study, we evaluated the associations among FGFR2 SNPs rs2981582, rs2420946, and rs1219648; and MAP3K1 rs889312, with BC risk in 351 BRCA1/2-negative Chilean BC cases and 802 controls.

Since the discovery of the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes, much work has been carried out to identify further breast cancer (BC) susceptibility genes. BARD1 (BRCA1-associated ring domain) was originally identified as a BRCA1-interacting protein but has also been described in tumor-suppressive functions independent of BRCA1. Some association studies have suggested that the BARD1 Cys557Ser variant might be associated with increased risk of BC, but others have failed to confirm this finding.

Background: Bone morphogenetic protein 4 gene (BMP4) plays a key role during maxillofacial development, since orofacial clefts are observed in animals when this gene is conditionally inactivated. We recently reported the existence of association between nonsyndromic cleft lip/palate (NSCLP) and BMP4 polymorphisms by detecting transmission deviations for haplotypes that include a region containing a BMP4 promoter in case-parent trios. The aim of the present study was to search for possible causal mutations within BMP4 promoters (BMP4.

The distribution of BRCA1/2 germline mutations in breast/ovarian cancer (BC/OC) families varies among different populations. In the Chilean population, there are only two reports of mutation analysis of BRCA1/2, and these included a low number of BC and/or OC patients. Moreover, the prevalence of BRCA1/2 genomic rearrangements in Chilean and in other South American populations is unknown.

Based on association and sequencing studies, investigators have postulated muscle segment homeobox 1 (MSX1) as a strong candidate gene involved in the causation of nonsyndromic cleft lip with or without cleft palate (NSCLP). Parent-of-origin effects have been suggested for some NSCLP candidate genes but not for MSX1. The aims of the present study were to test for allele/haplotype associations applying the transmission disequilibrium test (TDT) and the transmission asymmetry test (TAT) to evaluate the possible parent-of-origin effects of MSX1 in Chilean patients with NSCLP.
