While conventional CT scan has historically been used for maxillofacial bone imaging. The introduction of cone beam CT (CBCT) in the new millennium has revolutionized the use of CT for dental and maxillofacial diagnoses. This paper presents two clinical examples of delayed diagnoses associated with maxillofacial imaging, describes the reasons for the delays and offers potential preventive measures.

Objective: To determine the prevalence of carotid artery calcification as detected on panoramic radiographs in a Saudi population.

Methods: This cross sectional study was conducted at the College of Dentistry, King Saud University, Saudi Arabia between March 2008 and January 2009. Five hundred and fifty-five panoramic radiographs of Saudi patients aged 30 years and above was collected from the patient charts.

Objective: Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a new imaging technique that uses light to image dental structures interferometrically. OCT creates cross-sectional images that have potential diagnostic value for dental applications. When used in epidemiological studies, OCT offers a safe, non-invasive technique to discriminate occlusal sealants and composite restorations.
