Congenital pseudarthrosis of the clavicle is a rare phenomenon with multiple proposed causes. Surgical management is typically indicated either because of the cosmetic appearance of the irregularity or, less commonly, for pain, particularly in adolescent patients. Multiple surgical methods have previously described in the literature, which have raised concern owing to the persistently high rate of nonunion postoperatively.

This article investigates the effect of the cuff size of arterial bypass grafts and the flow conditions on the hemodynamics in the anastomosis (connection) to the artery, using numerical simulations. We consider a fluid-structure interaction problem which is solved based on a partitioned scheme. Additionally, we employ computational fluid dynamics to investigate the effect of a rigid wall assumption.

Article Synopsis
  • - Cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX) is a genetic disorder marked by a deficiency in sterol 27-hydroxylase, leading to dangerous buildups of cholestanol and bile alcohols in the brain, tendons, and nerves.
  • - A review of literature highlighted that CTX patients typically show elevated cholestanol levels while having normal or low serum cholesterol levels; this dyslipidemia may indicate increased risk for atherosclerosis and cardiovascular issues.
  • - The study suggests the potential use of cholesterol metabolites, like bile alcohols, as follow-up markers for monitoring CTX due to their relationship with abnormal lipid profiles and associated clinical symptoms.

Introduction: Recent innovations in shoulder arthroplasty include three-dimensional (3D) CT software imaging that can be used to predict which prosthetic implants will be used intraoperatively. Correct prediction of the implants may optimize supply chain logistics for the surgeon, hospital, ambulatory surgery center, and the implant company. The purpose of this study was to examine a single surgeon's experience with this software to determine its predictive accuracy in determining which implants would be used intraoperatively.

Background: Anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) tears are common injuries; they are often associated with concomitant injuries to other structures in the knee, including bone bruises. While there is limited evidence that bone bruises are associated with slightly worse clinical outcomes, the implications of bone bruises for the articular cartilage and the risk of developing osteoarthritis (OA) in the knee are less clear. Recent studies suggest that the bone bruise pattern may be helpful in predicting the presence of meniscal ramp lesions.

This work is concerned with Al/Al-oxide(AlO)/Al-layer systems which are important for Josephson-junction-based superconducting devices such as quantum bits. The device performance is limited by noise, which has been to a large degree assigned to the presence and properties of two-level tunneling systems in the amorphous AlO tunnel barrier. The study is focused on the correlation of the fabrication conditions, nanostructural and nanochemical properties and the occurrence of two-level tunneling systems with particular emphasis on the AlO-layer.

Current therapies for common types of cancer such as renal cell cancer are often ineffective and unspecific, and novel pharmacological targets and approaches are in high demand. Here we show the unexpected possibility for the rapid and selective killing of renal cancer cells through activation of calcium-permeable nonselective transient receptor potential canonical (TRPC) calcium channels by the sesquiterpene (-)-englerin A. This compound was found to be a highly efficient, fast-acting, potent, selective, and direct stimulator of TRPC4 and TRPC5 channels.
