In 2024, circulating vaccine-derived poliovirus type 2 (cVDPV2) was detected in wastewater samples in Finland, Germany, Poland, Spain and the United Kingdom (UK). All strains were genetically linked, but sequence analysis showed high genetic diversity among the strains identified within individual wastewater sites and countries and an unexpected high genetic proximity among isolates from different countries. Taken together these results, with sequential samples having tested positive in various sites, a broader geographic distribution beyond positive sampling sites must be considered.

Method: We used data from 1,548 respondents in Switzerland to Wave 8 (2019/2020) of the Survey on Health, Ageing, and Retirement in Europe.

Background: Early mobility is one strategy to reduce the harm from immobility that children experience in the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU). Canard cascading (CC) is observed in dynamical networks with global adaptive coupling. It is a slow-fast phenomenon characterized by a recurrent sequence of fast transitions between distinct and slowly evolving quasistationary states. In this Letter, we uncover the dynamical mechanisms behind CC, using an illustrative example of globally and adaptively coupled semiconductor lasers, where CC represents sequential switching on and off the lasers.

AI-Augmented Kidney Stone Composition Analysis with Auto-Release Improves Quality, Efficiency, Cost-Effectiveness, and Staff Satisfaction.

Background: We sought to evaluate key performance indicators related to an internally developed and deployed artificial intelligence (AI)-augmented kidney stone composition test system for potential improvements in test quality, efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and staff satisfaction.

Methods: We compared quality, efficiency, staff satisfaction, and financial data from the 6 months after the AI-augmented laboratory test system was deployed (test period) with data from the same 6-month period in the previous year (control period) to determine if AI-augmentation improved key performance indicators of this laboratory test.

Results: In the 6 months following the deployment (test period) of the AI-augmented kidney stone composition test system, 44 830 kidney stones were analyzed.

Linalyl anthranilate (LNA) has been identified in a number of plant extracts and essential oils by various authors using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). However, the reported retention behavior of LNA in these studies is inconsistent with the retention data provided in the NIST database. Therefore, the objective of this study was to determine whether the reports of LNA were the result of misidentifications in GC-MS analyses or if the linear NIST retention index was inaccurate.

In this short and popular review, we summarise some of our findings analysing the replication cycles of large DNA viruses using scanning transmission electron tomography (STEM tomography) that we applied in the laboratory of Paul Walther. It is also a tribute to a very kind and expert scientist, who recently retired.
