Objectives: The objectives are to assess the effectiveness of a modified and adapted oral sensorimotor intervention (MA-OSMI) protocol for infants in India on the rate and performance of breastfeeding among preterm (PT) infants at discharge.
Design: Single-centre randomised control trial.
Setting: Level III B neonatal intensive care unit in a quaternary care hospital in South India.
Aim: The study aimed to understand awareness, perceptions, and barriers to voice therapy among beginners, performers, and teachers of Carnatic music.
Method: Barriers from the literature were obtained, and the guide for the semistructured interview was developed. Twelve Carnatic singers (four each identified as beginners, performers, and teachers) were contacted and interviewed on an online platform.
Purpose: Chronic Cough (CC) is an emerging area of practice in speech language pathology. Behavioral treatment for managing CC has gained attention in the recent past. This study aimed to devise a comprehensive behavioural therapy program for CC by involving allied health professionals (AHPs), who are typically involved in management of CC.

The Swallowing Proficiency for Eating and Drinking (SPEAD) test assesses the oral and pharyngeal phases of swallowing using three different consistencies.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to establish normative data for the SPEAD test among healthy individuals aged 20-79 years.
Background: The Test of Mastication and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) is a reliable tool for assessing chewing and swallowing in healthy adults, using commercially available crackers. TOMASS-Children (TOMASS-C) is the paediatric version of TOMASS.
Objective: The present study aimed to establish normative data for TOMASS-C using a validated regional commercial cracker among healthy individuals aged between 6-20 years of India.
Self-reported swallowing difficulties are highly prevalent but underreported among older adults. The aging population in India is increasing, yet there is a lack of empirical data on self-reported swallowing difficulties in older adults. In the present study, we aimed to estimate the prevalence of self-reported swallowing difficulties and assess the swallowing-related quality of life (QOL) among community-dwelling older adults in India.

Purpose: Stuttering is a fluency disorder that mostly begins in childhood and affects many people in our societies. No standardized screening tools are available to check for stuttering in the Indian school-going population. Thus, the study aimed at developing a screening tool to identify children who stutter among the school-going population using a Delphi-based approach.

Method: Based on a literature review and clinical experience, we developed and validated a hypothetical case involving an adult with dysphagia (representing the problem) and a purpose-built 22-item questionnaire (representing the solution). We distributed the questionnaire electronically by sending an e-mail to 2,069 SLPs and also published a flyer on the dysphagia special interest group of India.

Purpose: The current study aimed to profile vocal fold morphology, vocal fold symmetry, gender and task-specific data for vocal fold length (VFL) and vocal fold displacement velocity (VFDV) in young normophonic adults in the age range of 18-30 years using ultrasonography (USG).
Methods: Participants underwent USG across quiet breathing, /a/ phonation and /i/ phonation tasks, and acoustic analysis was conducted to explore the relationship between USG and acoustic measures.
Results: The study found that males have longer vocal folds than females, and overall greater velocities were observed in /a/ phonation, followed by /i/ phonation, with the lowest velocity observed in the quiet breathing task.
The current study aimed to adapt and validate the speech handicap index into the Kannada language, and also to investigate its psychometric properties in Kannada speaking individuals with oral and oropharyngeal cancers. This is a cross-sectional study and it was carried out in two phases. The first phase dealt with the translation of the English version of SHI into the Kannada language, and its validation on 95 healthy individuals and 25 individuals with oral or oropharyngeal cancer.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFOwing to differences in clinical approaches toward videofluoroscopic swallowing studies (VFSS), professional and governing bodies in some countries have implemented guidelines for performing VFSS. However, in India, the establishment of such practice guidelines is in initial stages of acceptance and there are no uniform guidelines. The aim of the current study was to investigate and describe the clinical practice patterns related to VFSS assessments among Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs) in India.

Design: Cross-sectional.
Setting: Tertiary care hospital in South India.
Objectives: This study aimed to determine the prevalence of reported dysphagia and associated pneumonia risk among patients with stroke in India.
Method: We carried out a systematic review following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines. The primary outcome of interest was dysphagia and pneumonia among patients with stroke in India.

The Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS) is a reliable and well-validated tool to assess the effectiveness of solid bolus ingestion. Previous studies have established normative values for 4 to 80+ years across a range of commercially available crackers and countries. The current study aimed to establish normative data for the TOMASS across age and gender groups for a commercially available biscuit (cracker) for the adult Indian population.
View Article and Find Full Text PDFA wide body of literature has demonstrated that the neural representation of healthy swallowing is mostly bilateral, with one hemisphere dominant over the other. While several studies have demonstrated the presence of laterality for swallowing related functions among young adults, the data on older adults are still growing. The purpose of this paper is to investigate potential changes in hemispheric dominance in healthy aging adults for swallowing related tasks using a behavioral dual-task paradigm.

Videokymography enables to detect even subtle variationsin vocal fold vibrations. The aim of the present study was to study the videokymographic characteristics among women with PCOS.

Methods: Twenty individuals with non-laryngeal malignancies of the head and neck who received chemoradiation were divided by block randomisation into an intervention group that received voice rehabilitation and a control group without rehabilitation. All patients underwent acoustic analysis, perceptual and subjective analysis of voice before the commencement of chemoradiotherapy and at 1, 3 and 6 months after chemoradiotherapy.
This data article accompanies the manuscript titled 'The Test of Masticating and Swallowing Solids (TOMASS): reliability, validity and normative data for the adult Indian population.' TOMASS is a widely used procedure to assess the effectiveness of solid bolus ingestion. Previous studies have established normative values for 4 to 80+ years across a range of commercially available crackers and countries.

The rates of pneumonia are lesser among those individuals who have passed a dysphagia screening test. Only few among the existing screening tests meet the required standards; the timed water swallow test (TWST) is one among them.

Background: SLPs have a crucial need to depend on comprehensive clinical swallowing assessments to determine the presence of dysphagia in neonates. A comprehensive clinical swallowing assessment that is ethnoculturally sensitive may help to identify the presence and severity of swallowing problems in neonates.
Objective: The study aimed to construct and validate the contents of a test for oropharyngeal dysphagia in Indian neonates (TOD-IN).
Objective: The present study aimed to translate, validate the Reflux Symptom Index in Kannada language and to compare its outcomes between normal individuals and individuals with laryngopharyngeal reflux.
Study Design: Cross sectional study design MATERIALS AND METHOD: : The English version of Reflux Symptom Index was translated into Kannada language using standard procedures. A total of 162 participants participated in the study, 81 with laryngopharyngeal reflux and 81 controls.
Background: Eating Assessment Tool 10 is a symptom survey and has several advantages over other existing questionnaires. The instrument has also proven to be useful in establishing initial dysphagia symptom severity and to aid in measuring treatment outcomes. Due to its wide applicability, the instrument has been translated into several languages.
