Cholesterol is a critical lipid that is present at high concentrations in the plasma membranes of animal cells. Most of the membrane cholesterol is sequestered by other membrane lipids and the transmembrane domains of proteins. Cholesterol in excess of such sequestration forms a pool that is referred to as "accessible cholesterol.

Purpose: Very little is known about primary care involvement in the care of cancer survivors beyond the initial 5 years post-treatment when transitioning to primary care is guideline-recommended for many survivors.

Methods: The ICanCare study is a longitudinal survey of women diagnosed with breast cancer in 2014-2015 identified in the Georgia and Los Angeles SEER registries. Women were surveyed during initial treatment and again approximately 6 years later in survivorship (2021-2022; n = 1,412, 60% response rate).

  • The audit aimed to assess and improve the completeness and accuracy of the National Joint Registry (NJR) dataset specifically for elbow arthroplasty surgeries.
  • In a two-phase approach, Phase 1 compared NJR data with NHS England Hospital Episode Statistics (HES), identifying thousands of unmatched and inaccurate records, particularly for radial head arthroplasties (RHAs).
  • Phase 2 involved collaboration among 142 NHS hospitals to correct and update records, resulting in an improved completeness of the NJR dataset from 63% to 93% and accuracy from 94% to 98%.

Purpose: The occurrence of new seizure(s) in older adults is two- to three-fold higher as compared to the younger population, and previous studies have characterized the clinical features of seizures in patients beyond 60 or 65 years. This study, in response to the recent ILAE task force on epilepsy in the elderly (2023), has assessed the clinical characteristics of individuals who are over 85 years old.

Methods: Data was collected from prospectively maintained electronic medical records, and the participants were divided into seizure-free and seizure-recurrence groups, and their clinical characteristics were compared.

  • A study was conducted on spotted seals in Peter the Great Bay to measure the levels of halogenated organic pollutants (HOPs), revealing high accumulation of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) and organochlorine pesticides despite regulations.
  • *The research found that older seals had higher levels of hexabromocyclododecanes, and identified 35 additional non-target PCBs that are not regularly monitored, indicating a gap in current assessment methods.
  • *Alarmingly, 95% of the seals had PCB levels surpassing safe thresholds, showing the urgent need for more comprehensive monitoring strategies to evaluate the health risks of HOPs to marine life.

Hairy cell leukemia variant (HCL-v) is a rare malignancy of clonal mature B-cells that follows a chronic disease course. HCL-v patients are often resistant to purine nucleoside analogs, which are the first-line therapy. To address the shortcomings of current therapy for HCL-v, we investigated the activity of a BAFF ligand-based CAR-T cell which binds to all three BAFF receptors, BAFF-receptor, TACI, and BCMA.

This study investigated the role of swimming exercise in regulating melanoma tumour growth and glycolysis in cancer cells, the specific mechanism involved was also studied. In our study, a murine melanoma tumour model was established to assess the impact of swimming on tumour growth. The mRNA and protein expressions were assessed using qRT-PCR, western blot, and IHC.

Cancer is a disease resulting from uncontrolled cell division, which significantly contributes to human mortality rates. An alternative approach to cancer treatment, such as cancer immunotherapy, is needed as the existing chemotherapy and radiotherapy approaches target the cancer cells and healthy dividing cells. Vitamin E is a plant-derived lipid-soluble antioxidant with numerous health-promoting benefits, including anticancer and immunomodulatory properties.

The biggest challenge in current isolation methods for lipid bilayer-encapsulated vesicles, such as exosomes, secretory, and synthetic vesicles, lies in the absence of a unified approach that seamlessly delivers high purity, yield, and scalability for large-scale applications. To address this gap, we have developed an innovative method that utilizes photosensitive lipid nanoprobes specifically designed for efficient isolation of vesicles and sorting them into subpopulations based on size. The photosensitive component in the probe undergoes cleavage upon exposure to light, facilitating the release of vesicles in their near-native form.

  • The skin is the largest organ and protects against threats like UV rays, infections, and injuries, but can develop disorders like acne and eczema due to various causes.
  • Approximately one-third of the global population is affected by skin conditions, which can worsen with age and UV exposure, leading to issues like pigmentation and wrinkles.
  • Recent studies highlight the benefits of natural antioxidants like tocotrienols (from sources like rice bran and olives) and squalene (from fish liver oils) for skin health, showing promise in treating skin disorders and improving overall skin condition.

Cyanobacteria are resilient microorganisms and thrive in environments exposed to UV radiation, ranging from ocean surfaces to scorching hot springs and dry expanses. 'Cyanobacterial Resilience' refers to their ability to withstand UV radiation, revealing intricate genomic secrets and adaptive mechanisms ensuring survival. These mechanisms include metabolic adaptations, robust DNA repair systems and UV-protective compounds such as Scytonemin and Mycosporine, vital for shielding against UV radiation survival.

Membrane-associated ring-CH-type finger 6 (MARCH6), also designated as TEB4 or RNF176, is an E3 ligase that is embedded in membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum where it ubiquitinates many substrate proteins to consign them to proteasome-mediated degradation. In recent years, MARCH6 has been identified as a key regulator of several metabolic pathways, including cholesterol and lipid droplet homeostasis, protein quality control, ferroptosis, and tumorigenesis. Despite its importance, there are currently no specific antibodies to detect and monitor MARCH6 levels in cultured cells and animals.

  • Parkinson's disease (PD) is a major neurodegenerative disorder, marked by the buildup of α-Synuclein and loss of dopamine-producing neurons, greatly impacting elderly people's quality of life.
  • The disease involves oxidative stress and the electron transport chain, leading to increased production of reactive oxygen species (ROS), with no effective disease-modifying treatments currently available, only symptom relief with medications like Levodopa.
  • Carotenoids, natural pigments found in plants, may offer health benefits including neuroprotection, and this review explores how they affect cell models related to neurodegenerative diseases.

Background: Vitamin E from palm oil, known as the tocotrienol-rich fraction (TRF), has been shown to have immune-enhancing activity. To date, only one dose of TRF (400 mg daily) has been tested in a clinical trial. The proposed study will evaluate the immune-enhancing activity effects of lower doses (200, 100 and 50 mg) in a clinical trial using an influenza vaccine as the immunological challenge.

Cost-effectiveness analyses (CEA) are important in healthcare decision-making and resource allocation; however, expanding the scope of CEAs beyond the traditional clinicoeconomic concepts to also include value elements such as health equity has attracted much interest in recent years. This umbrella review aimed to synthesize evidence on how equity concepts have been considered in modified types of CEAs. Publicly available articles in MEDLINE were searched on January 25, 2024, to identify systematic reviews (SLRs) published in English since 2013 that incorporate health equity considerations in CEAs.
