Background: Allogeneic bone marrow transplantation remains the most potent curative therapy for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) due to the graft-versus-tumor effect provided by donor cells. Donor chimerism is utilized early after transplantation to evaluate engraftment and to monitor the persistence of donor hematopoiesis.

Older patients have similar immune checkpoint inhibitor efficacy and rates of adverse events as younger patients, but appear to have decreased tolerability, particularly in the oldest patient cohort (>80 years), often leading to early cessation of therapy. Purpose: Experimental investigation in human eyelids to confirm that exposing excised tarsal plates to ultraviolet-A radiation can induce a stiffening effect through the riboflavin-photosensitized crosslinking of tarsal collagen.

Methods: Thirteen tarsal plates excised from nonfrozen human cadavers were irradiated with ultraviolet-A rays (365 nm wavelength) at an irradiance of 75 mW/cm 2 for 3 minutes, equivalent to a radiation fluence of 13.5 J/cm 2 , in the presence of a riboflavin derivative as a photosensitizer.

This investigation explores the initial impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on live chat virtual reference services (VRS) in academic libraries and on user behaviors from March to December 2020 using Goffman's theoretical framework (1956, 1967, 1971). Data from 300 responses by academic librarians to two longitudinal online surveys and 28 semi-structured interviews were quantitatively and qualitatively analyzed. Results revealed that academic librarians were well-positioned to provide VRS as university information hubs during pandemic shutdowns.

Anemia is not only a consequence of bleeding, but also a modifiable risk factor for bleeding in patients with thrombocytopenia or platelet function defects. In this review we outline the mechanism of anemia-induced bleeding in patients with platelet disorders, which involves a disturbance in normal red blood cell (RBC) rheology and reduced platelet margination to the endothelial surface due to a decrease in RBC mass, leading to impaired primary hemostasis and bleeding. Biologically, anemia reduces the mass of RBCs in the central column of flowing blood through a vessel resulting in fewer platelets coming into contact with the endothelial surface at the periphery of the flowing blood column.
