Low-grade cystic mucinous neoplasm of the sigmoid colon has never been previously reported and a classification for such a tumor does not currently exist. Here, we present a case of low-grade cystic mucinous neoplasm of the sigmoid colon and discuss the differential diagnosis especially as it relates to clinical management. Our case is a 68-year-old male who presented with anemia and a history of a lower gastrointestinal tract bleed.

Objectives: Electronic health records (EHR) enable transmission and tracking of referrals between primary-care practitioners (PCPs) and subspecialists. We used an EHR to examine follow-up actions on electronic referral communication in a large multispecialty VA facility.

Methods: We retrieved outpatient referrals to five subspecialties between October 2006 and December 2007, and queried the EHR to determine their status: completed, discontinued (returned to PCP), or unresolved (no action taken by subspecialist).

Background: Fortilin, a recently characterized nuclear antiapoptotic factor structurally distinct from inhibitor of apoptosis proteins (IAPs) and Bcl-2 family member proteins, has been suggested to be involved in cell survival and regulation of apoptosis within the cardiovascular system. In this continued investigation, we characterized the influence of adenovirus-mediated fortilin (Ad-fortilin) gene delivery on vascular remodeling after experimental angioplasty.

YC-1, a synthetic benzyl indazole derivative, is capable of stimulating endogenous vessel wall cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP) production and attenuating the remodeling response to experimental arterial angioplasty. In an effort to investigate the mechanisms of this YC-1-mediated vasoprotection, we examined the influence of soluble YC-1 or YC-1 incorporated in a polyethylene glycol (PEG) hydrogel on cultured rat vascular smooth muscle cell (SMC) cGMP synthesis, SMC proliferation, and platelet function. Results demonstrate that soluble YC-1 stimulated SMC cGMP production in a dose-dependent fashion, while both soluble and hydrogel-released YC-1 inhibited vascular SMC proliferation in a dose-dependent fashion without effects on cell viability.
