Background: Elderly patients are potentially more vulnerable to prolonged hospital stay as they frequently require additional resources to facilitate their discharge. In an acute hospital setting, we aimed to quantify and compare length of stay (LOS) for all patients over and under the age of 65, and identify the number and cause of days lost under the care of a single surgical unit.
Methods: Over a 4 month period from January to April 2010, data on the management and source of potential delay was collected daily on consecutive patients admitted and discharged under the care of one consultant surgeon at a district general hospital.
There currently exists much debate as to the active state related to the "long afterglow" effect in europium doped oxide materials. Redox couples that consist of Eu(+/2+) and Eu(2+/3+) are discussed, but no common answer is currently accepted. Here, we present a comparison of the optical properties of a commercially available SrAl(2)O(4):Eu, Dy phosphor, as a function of nanoparticle size reduction via dry mechanical milling.

Recurrence risks were estimated from 466 first-degree relatives of 100 probands with OCD and 113 first-degree relatives of 33 non-psychiatric controls. Rates of non-OCD anxiety disorders and MDD were comparable in relatives of OCD probands and controls.

Examined the associations of adolescents' self-reported anxiety sensitivity with semi-structured, interview-based anxiety and depressive symptoms and anxiety disorders. The sample included 121 adolescents and their parents who participated in a larger epidemiological, high-risk family study of substance abuse and anxiety disorders (Merikangas, Dierker, & Szatmari, 1998). A series of hierarchical multiple regressions revealed the incremental validity of anxiety sensitivity, beyond the contribution of self-rated anxiety, to anxiety symptoms and comorbid anxiety disorders.
