Family-centred practice in speech-language pathology practice with children and young people in out-of-home care in Australia: A scoping review.

: Communication difficulties are more common in children or young people (CYP) who have lived in out-of-home care (OOHC) compared to the general population. Principles of family-centred practice (FCP) are frequently utilised by speech-language pathologists (SLPs) when working with CYP with communication difficulties. The aim of this scoping review was to describe how the principles of FCP are applied in the literature to speech-language pathology practice with CYP aged 0-18 in OOHC in Australia.

COVID-19: Transatlantic Declines in Pediatric Emergency Admissions.

Introduction: This cross-sectional study looked at the impact of the SARS-CoV-2/COVID-19 pandemic on pediatric emergency department (PED) attendances and admissions (as a proxy for severity of illness) in the United States and United Kingdom.

Methods: Data were extracted for children and adolescents, younger than 16 years, attending Royal Manchester Children's Hospital (RMCH, United Kingdom), and Yale New Haven Children's Hospital (YNHCH, United States). Attendances for weeks 1 to 20 of 2020 and 2019 were compared, and likelihood of admission was assessed via calculation of odds ratios, using week 13 (lockdown) as a cutoff.

Acute carbon monoxide toxicity in a paediatric cohort: analysis of 10 boys poisoned during a scuba diving lesson.

Background: Recent public health strategies have contributed towards a significant reduction in the incidence of carbon monoxide (CO) poisonings. When events do occur, symptoms can vary dramatically depending on the carboxyhaemoglobin level and individual factors. Most reports to date focus on individual cases or larger retrospective reviews of diverse cohorts.

Awareness and Knowledge of Oral Cancer and Potentially Malignant Oral Disorders among Dental Patients in Far North Queensland, Australia.

Background: Public awareness/knowledge on oral and pharyngeal cancer (OPC), potentially malignant disorders (PMODs) and their risk factors is crucial for prevention and early detection of OPC and PMODs. Yet, there are no published data available on the awareness and knowledge of OPC and PMODs among people living in Far North Queensland, Australia.

Materials And Methods: This study was conducted as a cross sectional survey.

Blended learning in paediatric emergency medicine: preliminary analysis of a virtual learning environment.

Objectives: Paediatric emergency medicine (PEM) currently faces many competing educational challenges. Recent changes to the working patterns have made the delivery of effective teaching to trainees extremely difficult. We developed a virtual learning environment, on the basis of socioconstructivist principles, which allows learning to take place regardless of time or location.

A short cut review was carried out to establish whether primary closure of animal bites increases wound infection rates. Altogether 74 papers were found using the reported search, of which one presented the best evidence to answer the clinical question. The author, date and country of publication, patient group studied, study type, relevant outcomes, results and study weaknesses of this best paper are tabulated.

A short cut review was carried out to establish whether the addition of intravenous magnesium to standard treatments improved outcome in patients with exacerbations of COPD. Altogether 465 papers were found using the reported search, of which one presented the best evidence to answer the clinical question.
