Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to understand how specific molecular changes, particularly the expression of a certain gene, influence the clinical outcomes of patients with pulmonary carcinoids, which can range from slow-growing to deadly tumors.
  • Researchers analyzed RNA sequencing data from two cohorts of pulmonary carcinoid patients (totaling 193) to determine the prognostic value of this gene expression and its relationship with telomerase activity, which is linked to tumor aggressiveness.
  • Results showed that high expression of the gene correlates with worse survival rates and is an independent predictor of poor clinical outcomes, suggesting that it could be a key factor in assessing the severity of pulmonary carcinoids.

Objective: Despite neoadjuvant chemoradiotherapy, Pancoast tumors still present surgical and oncologic challenges. To optimize outcomes, we used a multidisciplinary care paradigm with medical and radiation oncology, and involvement of spine neurosurgery for most T3 and all T4 tumors. Spine neurosurgery permitted resection of transverse process for T3 and vertebral body resection for T4 tumors.

Thyroid transcription factor 1 (TTF1) and p40 are widely-utilized diagnostic markers of lung adenocarcinoma (LUAD) and squamous cell carcinoma (LUSC), respectively. Diffuse coexpression of TTF1 and p40 has been described in only rare case reports. In a multi-institutional study, we collected the largest cohort of these unusual tumours to-date (n = 14), with the goal of elucidating their clinicopathological and genomic characteristics.
