Nail surgeries, including nail biopsies (NBs), are performed relatively infrequently-perhaps due to dermatologists' unfamiliarity with nail unit anatomy and lack of formal NB training during residency. To address this educational gap, we sought to create a guide that details the surgical instruments used for the nail matrix tangential excision (shave) biopsy technique-the most common technique used in our nail specialty clinic.

Article Synopsis
  • Onychocryptosis, or ingrown toenails, is a painful nail condition that may be linked to various risk factors like other health issues and income levels.
  • A study analyzed data from over 6,000 cases and found that those with onychocryptosis had higher risks of related conditions such as diabetes, obesity, and certain foot deformities, particularly among low-income individuals.
  • The research suggests that screening for onychocryptosis in at-risk groups, particularly those with lower income and related health conditions, should be prioritized to improve nail care education and prevention efforts.

Background: Molluscum contagiosum (MC) is a poxvirus that manifests as firm, smooth, dome-shaped, umbilicated, flesh-colored papules. In adults, MC is commonly spread by sexual contact, and is self-limited in patients with intact immune systems but more widely distributed and difficult to treat in immunocompromised persons. We analyzed cases of adult MC for associations with immunosuppression, lifestyle risk factors, and sexually transmitted infections (STIs).

Article Synopsis
  • Pityriasis versicolor (PV) is a fungal skin infection most common in younger individuals, particularly in humid conditions and is linked to factors like hyperhidrosis.
  • A case-control study using the All of Us Database identified 456 PV patients and 1368 controls, revealing that PV sufferers are typically younger, more often male, and have higher incidences of acne compared to controls.
  • The findings suggest that acne may increase the risk of developing PV, while factors such as type 2 diabetes mellitus and older age may reduce it, indicating potential educational opportunities for physicians to inform acne patients about PV prevention strategies.

Article Synopsis
  • Nail excisions are procedures for treating ingrown nails and nail spicules, requiring specialized skills and a thorough understanding of practice patterns among U.S. providers.
  • A study analyzed Medicare data to determine factors influencing the high performance of nail excisions, identifying podiatrists as the primary providers, with those in the South, more experienced, and solo practitioners performing more procedures.
  • Results indicated that increased experience correlates with higher annual excision numbers, while higher household incomes in the practice area relate to fewer excisions performed by providers.

Article Synopsis
  • - Tinea capitis is a fungal infection of the scalp primarily affecting children but also seen in adults, with postmenopausal African American women at higher risk.
  • - Adults living in crowded conditions or with weakened immune systems, particularly those in households with infected children, are more prone to this condition.
  • - Diagnosis typically involves fungal cultures and trichoscopy, while treatment focuses on oral antifungals like griseofulvin and terbinafine; however, resistance to treatment is becoming a concern.

Synopsis of recent research by authors named "Rachel C Hill"

  • - Rachel C. Hill's recent research primarily focuses on the intersection of dermatological conditions with socioeconomic factors, comorbidities, and health disparities, as evidenced by studies like those on melasma and onychocryptosis using the All of Us Research Program Database.
  • - The author investigates associations between skin conditions and broader health issues, including the correlation between molluscum contagiosum and sexually transmitted infections, further highlighting the role of lifestyle risk factors in dermatological health.
  • - Hill also explores the safety and implications of dermatological treatments, such as the effects of spironolactone and the risks associated with energy-based devices, aiming to improve patient care and awareness of treatment-side effects.
