. Effective empathic communication between health care providers and patients is an essential part of health care. In resource-poor contexts, evidence is needed to understand the quality and content of health care communication within real-life clinical engagements.

Yet, most services addressing these challenges are delivered in setting underutilized by men and are often inconsistent with male identity. This cluster randomized controlled trial aimed to reduce multiple risk behaviors found among young men township areas on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa.

The supervision of NHWs in most resource-limited settings is still primarily disorganized, without clear guidelines that provide the necessary structure for supervision. The need for supervision is even greater for NHWs working in the context of trauma, not only to provide training and ensure adequate delivery of care but also to provide support to minimize the psychological impact of their work.

Poor transitioning to adult care can lead to several adverse HIV-related outcomes for adolescents living with HIV, including disruption of care, non-adherence to ART and virological failure. In this qualitative study, we explore the barriers to and facilitators of the transition to adult care among HIV-infected youth from the perspectives of health care workers and allied staff.

We tested the effectiveness of a behavioral intervention using soccer training to reduce the cluster of risks associated with HIV and substance use. This cluster randomized controlled trial was conducted with men aged 18-29 years old in 27 neighborhoods in the townships of Cape Town, South Africa.

Ensuring fair and ethical assessment practice is, however, complex and challenging in a diverse multicultural setting such as South Africa. A myriad of factors-including culture, and language-may moderate individual performance on career interest assessments.

The Grade 9 Career Guidance Project, originally developed as a group-based career development intervention, required radical adaptation into a self-directed, manualized format to offer career guidance to Grade 9 learners from low-income communities amid a global pandemic. The adaptation and continuation of the project was deemed essential as secondary school learners in low-income communities have limited career guidance support.

This study investigated perceptions of, and motivations for, alcohol consumption during pregnancy and associated practices in a rural district of Lesotho.
Methods: A combination of purposive and snowball sampling methods were used to identify pregnant women and mothers with young children from the general community, as well as from alcohol-serving venues.
Background: Evidence from high-income countries (HICs) has documented a higher rate of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in females than males. However, data are limited on sex differences in PTSD from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), despite particularly high levels of trauma experienced by LMIC youth.
Objectives: In a sample of adolescents from an impoverished South African community, we examined sex differences in PTSD, as well as co-occurring depression, adolescent age, and the type and extent of trauma exposure as potential contributors to female vulnerability.
Background: Adolescent HIV and pregnancy rates in Southern Africa are amongst the highest in the world. Despite decades of sexual and reproductive health (SRH) programming targeting adolescents, recent trends suggest there is a continued need for interventions targeting condom use for this age group.
Methods: This review synthesises evidence from qualitative studies that describe the determinants of condom use among adolescents in Southern Africa.
: Rates of adolescent HIV and unintended pregnancy in southern Africa are amongst the highest in the world. Gender-transformative interventions that address underlying gender inequalities and engage both males and females have been emphasised by the World Health Organisation, amongst others, to target prevention. However, few such gender-transformative interventions have been rigorously developed or evaluated.

The standard of care that people living with HIV receive consists of 3 sessions of readiness counseling delivered by lay counselors (LCs). In the largest antiretroviral therapy (ART) program worldwide, effective and early HIV and ART education and support are key for ensuring ART adoption, adherence, and retention in care.

Community health workers (CHWs), particularly in low-resource settings, play critical roles in promoting equitable healthcare among underserved populations. However, CHWs often shoulder additional burdens as members of the same communities in which they work.

Increasingly, research demonstrates the importance of the psychological and social nature of the feeding context, and how it may be affected by maternal mental state, feeding skills and sensitivity. As such, feeding interactions may provide useful contexts for observations of maternal sensitivity, reflecting well on day-to-day maternal sensitivity.

Methods: Baseline data were collected as a part of a cluster randomised control trial (RCT) situated in Khayelitsha and Mfuleni, two peri-urban settlements situated on the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa.
Despite empirical support for "Self-control theory" in criminology, there is controversy about how self-control should be operationalized. Working within the framework of "self-control theory," we investigated if violence and criminal behaviors are associated with nine distinct dimensions of cognitive control in a community sample of young men (n = 654) living in peri-urban townships in South Africa. Cognitive control was assessed using the Behavior Rating Inventory of Executive Function.

However, little is known about how these factors contribute to the risk of arrest in South Africa, which has one of the highest rates of arrests globally. We examine both individual- and community-level factors associated with arrests among young men living in the townships of Cape Town.

Methods: In this prospective, single-center clinical trial, 60 patients were randomized into 2 groups: control patients (n = 28), who received low doses of prednisone throughout, and study patients (n = 32), who were withdrawn from steroids 7 days posttransplant.
The success of an arterial reconstruction is dependent on multiple factors, including patient selection, quality of the vessels, type of vascular conduit employed, and the surgical technique adopted. Transit time flow measurement is a technique that is now the standard of care for immediate graft patency verification following coronary artery bypass graft surgery. This study demonstrates that transit time flow measurement can be successfully used to evaluate renal transplant anastomoses: accurate intraoperative measurements provide a rapid objective assessment of renal graft patency.
