A Review of Myositis-Associated Interstitial Lung Disease.

There is a well-established relationship between different subsets of idiopathic inflammatory myopathies (IIMs, myositis) and interstitial lung disease (ILD), with lung complications sometimes presenting prior to myopathic manifestations. The subtypes of myositis include those that are strongly associated with ILD, such as polymyositis (PM) and dermatomyositis (DM). Research has shown that in certain patients, these can then be further divided into subtypes using myositis-specific antibodies (MSAs), which are specific for myositis, and myositis-associated antibodies (MAAs), which can be found in myositis in overlap syndromes with other connective tissue diseases (CTDs).

Pancreatitis, Panniculitis, and Polyarthritis Syndrome as the First Symptom of Necrotizing Pancreatitis.

Pancreatitis, panniculitis, and polyarthritis (PPP) syndrome is a very rare cutaneous manifestation found in patients with acute pancreatitis. We report the case of a 44-year-old man presenting with erythematous, painful lesions on the lower extremities and ankle swelling. The rheumatology service was consulted for possible erythema nodosum.

Implementing an Interactive Introduction to Complementary Medicine for Chronic Pain Management Into the Medical School Curriculum.

Introduction: In the setting of the opioid crisis, chronic pain management requires new approaches and open dialogue between physicians and patients to explore evidence-based nonpharmacologic treatments. We developed an educational session on the role of complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) for chronic pain management as part of our larger curriculum on health equity and social justice.

Methods: Students and faculty developed a novel educational session for second-year medical students consisting of a lecture and an experiential small-group session immersing the students in CAM.

Tasting the Tree of Life: Development of a Collaborative, Cross-Campus, Science Outreach Meal Event.

Communicating about science with the public can present a number of challenges, from participation to engagement to impact. In an effort to broadly communicate messages regarding biodiversity, evolution, and tree-thinking with the campus community at The College of New Jersey (TCNJ), a public, primarily undergraduate institution, we created a campus-wide, science-themed meal, "Tasting the Tree of Life: Exploring Biodiversity through Cuisine." We created nine meals that incorporated 149 species/ingredients across the Tree of Life.

Novel heterologous bacterial system reveals enhanced susceptibility to DNA damage mediated by yqgF, a nearly ubiquitous and often essential gene.

Despite its presence in most bacteria, yqgF remains one of only 13 essential genes of unknown function in Escherichia coli. Predictions of YqgF function often derive from sequence similarity to RuvC, the canonical Holliday junction resolvase. To clarify its role, we deleted yqgF from a bacterium where it is not essential, Acinetobacter baylyi ADP1.
