The hormonal levels of the gonadotropins, the weight of selected organs and of the triceps surae as well as body composition were determined in Sprague Dawley rats at 3 and 6 weeks after intensive training with or without a methandrostenelone (Dianabol) supplement (0.35 mg/kg/day). The controls were sedentary rats of similar age and weight at the start of the experiment.

One hundred patients with suspected cerebrovascular disease were studied, using Doppler imaging techniques (Dop-Scan), as described by Spencer in 1974. Using a continuous wave Doppler probe, derived images of the carotid vessels and their tributaries were constructed. Twenty-nine of these patients had angiographic studies.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 DNA synthesis and infections progeny production were studied in five different conditional hamster (BHK-21) cell cycle mutants. At the nonpermissive temperature (39.5 degrees C), both events were strongly inhibited in four of these cell lines.

Our previous finding of an association between herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV-1) and African green monkey kidney (BSC-1) DNAs in productively infected cells has been extended by investigating the influence of the time course, temperature, and multiplicity of infection on the extent of this association. The interaction of host and viral DNAs was not only dependent on the concentration of intracellular viral DNA, but also upon the particular conditions of infection. An examination of the time course of infection revealed that the amount of free viral DNA per cell reached a maximum well before the amount of viral-host-associated DNA did so, while an examination of the effect of temperature revealed a threefold variation in the amount of viral-host-associated DNA over a temperature range (33.

Human papilloma virus DNA has been examined for heterogeneity by electron microscopy, reassociation kinetics, and restriction endonuclease digestion. No heterogeneity in contour length was detected. The reassociation rate of papilloma DNA isolated from pooled warts was consistent with that expected for a homogeneous, unique DNA of molecular weight 5 X 10(6).

A method is described for the preparation of 125I-labelled SV40 DNA. Using this method, SV40 DNA can be routinely labelled to 15 - 10(6) dpm per mug; much higher specific activities are easily obtained by minor modifications of the method. Once incorporated, the radioactive label dissociates from DNA exceedingly slowly at 4 degrees C or at 68 degrees C.

A series of studies were performed on a Staphylococcus aureus strain thought to contain a pencillinase plasmid integrated into the host chromosome. Reassociation kinetics analysis of whole-cell deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in the presence of pure radioactive plasmid DNA revealed that plasmid-specific sequences were present at about 1 copy per chromosome equivalent as compared to 3.6 copies for the same plasmid in its autonomous state.

The quantity of penicillinase plasmid deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) in various strains of Staphylococcus aureus has been determined by DNA-DNA reassociation kinetics. Specifically, 32P- or 125I-labeled denatured probes of purified plasmid DNA were reassociated in the presence of denatured DNAs isolated from the bacterial strains in question. The number of plasmid copies per cell was calculated from the effect of the latter nucleic acid samples on the reassociation rate of the radiolabeled probe.

Yohimbine injected intravenously or intracerebroventricularly in conscious dogs produced behavioural excitation accompanied by a rise in blood pressure and heart rate. The cardiovascular effects were reduced or abolished by hexamethonium, phenoxybenzamine and reserpine. In conscious cats intravenously administered yohimbine was depressor but intracerebroventricular administration in these animals caused a rise in blood pressure accompanied by behavioural depression.

Five serological strains of tobacco ringspot virus isolated from naturally infected tobacco in North Carolina, and a strain isolated from watermelon in the Rio Grande Valley of Texas were transmitted from cucumber to cucumber by mass-screened and handpicked Xiphinerna americanum from North Carolina. The Eucharis mottle strain from Peru was not transmitted, indicating that a specific strain-vector relationship may exist between the geographically isolated strains from North and South America.
