Aims: Evaluation of fermentation process parameter interactions for the production of l-asparaginase by isolated Staphylococcus sp. - 6A.
Methods And Results: Fractional factorial design of experimentation (L18 orthogonal array of Taguchi methodology) was adopted to optimize nutritional (carbon and nitrogen sources), physiological (incubation temperature, medium pH, aeration and agitation) and microbial (inoculum level) fermentation factors.
L-Asparaginase shows antileukemic activity and is generally administered in the body in combination with other anticancer drugs like pyrimidine derivatives. In the present study, L-asparaginase was purified from a bacteria Erwinia carotovora and the effect of a dihydropyrimidine derivative (1-amino-6-methyl-4-phenyl-2-thioxo, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydropyrimidine-5-carboxylic acid methyl ester) was studied on the kinetic parameters Km and Vmax of the enzyme using L-asparagine as substrate. The enzyme had optimum activity at pH 8.

Two strains, YS9 and YS21, were identified as Kodamaea ohmeri and Candida fermentati, respectively. The third strain, YS12(T), differs from Candida parapsilosis, Candida orthopsilosis and Candida metapsilosis, the nearest phylogenetic neighbours, by 1.

Results of electronic band structure calculations, electrical resistance, thermoelectric power (TEP), and x-ray diffraction measurements, under pressure carried out on AuGa(2) to investigate its anomalous behaviour are reported. The first principles electronic band structure calculations confirm that a flat band close to the Fermi level along the Γ-X direction of the Brillouin zone is responsible for the unusual behaviour of AuGa(2). In synchrotron-based high-pressure x-ray diffraction measurements, it is observed to undergo a structural phase transition above 7 GPa.

We report simulations of adamantane by carefully combining ab initio and empirical approaches to enable simulations with internal degrees of freedom on crystalline adamantane up to a pressure of 26 GPa. Two sets of simulations, assuming the adamantane molecule as a rigid (RB) and flexible body (FB), have been carried out as a function of pressure up to 26 GPa to understand changes in the crystal structure as well as molecular structure. The flexible body simulations have been performed by including 6 lowest frequency internal modes (obtained from DFT calculations performed with Gaussian98) out of the total of 72.

Acetone hydrogenation was studied over a family of Cu/SiO2 catalysts as well as UHP Cu powder and a Cu chromite catalyst. Oxygen chemisorption via dissociative N2O adsorption was used to count surface Cu atoms and calculate crystallite sizes, and a microwave absorption technique was used to measure the electrical conductivity of these Cu particles. Under differential reaction conditions at 423 K and 1 atm, all catalysts exhibited deactivation on stream and activities were typically 10-20% of their initial values after 3-4 h on stream.

The lower abdominal bulge turned out to be her gravid uterus herniated through an anterior abdominal wall incisional hernia which is a rare but serious obstetric situation with complications such as premature labour, intrauterine growth retardation, strangulation, intrauterine death and rupture of the lower uterine segment been reported. We had a successful outcome by conservative treatment till 38 weeks of gestation followed by an elective lower segment Caesarean section with hernia repair.

During the recent years, in India, both in urban and rual, consumption of tobacco in the form of direct chewing of gutkha is alarmingly increasing especially in the young adults as which is major reason for subsistence of oral cancer. In the present investigation an attempt was made to find out the relationship between gutkha chewing including smoking and oral micro flora in some slum dwellers of Visakhapatnam.

Methods: The authors evaluated incident breast cancer risks from 1983 to 1998 according to employment characteristics and a 4-level proxy index for cumulative radiation exposure based on 2 mail surveys among 56,436 U.S.
Background: Massive transfusions are a risk factor for acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in severely injured patients. Neutrophil priming has been proposed to be an integral part of the early inflammatory response to trauma. To complement that work, we studied another major cell type involved in inflammation: the endothelial cell.

This study examines the implications of the procedure with respect to predictors of recurrence.
Methods: We performed a retrospective analysis of 144 consecutive TEMs from 1993 to 2004.
Multivariate data driven calibration models with neural networks (NNs) are developed for binary (Cu++ and Ca++) and quaternary (K+, Ca++, NO3- and Cl-) ion-selective electrode (ISE) data. The response profiles of ISEs with concentrations are non-linear and sub-Nernstian. This task represents function approximation of multi-variate, multi-response, correlated, non-linear data with unknown noise structure i.

Initial xylitol production was found to be 0.

Background: Breast cancer being one of the leading cancers among women in developing countries, prevention or identification of the disease at an early stage is of paramount importance in saving as well as improving the quality of life. Breast health awareness appears to be a pragmatic method for this.
Objective: To determine the acceptability and effectiveness of an educational intervention programme on breast health awareness for rural women by trained female health workers.

The common practice of excluding nonrespondents from standardized incidence ratio (SIR) analyses of these cohorts can bias the estimates of interest if nonrespondents and respondents differ on important characteristics related to outcomes of interest. We propose an analytic approach to reduce the impact of nonresponse in the analyses of SIRs.
