Article Synopsis
  • - The study focused on 44 cases of epithelioid myxofibrosarcoma (eMFS), a rare and aggressive cancer variant, examining factors like morphologic structure and cancer grading, revealing that the majority displayed diffuse epithelioid characteristics and high FNCLCC grades.
  • - Among the patients, mostly older adults with a higher incidence in males, local recurrence and metastasis were common; specifically, 10 out of 22 monitored patients developed metastases, typically to regional lymph nodes, regardless of tumor grade.
  • - An interesting note is that some cases initially diagnosed as eMFS shared genetic mutations typically seen in other UV-driven cancers, suggesting possible misdiagnosis and the need for careful evaluation

Lichen sclerosus is a debilitating and chronic disease that typically affects the anogenital area, although it can also be found on extragenital locations such as the shoulders, neck, trunk, breasts, and arms. Facial involvement is rare, but there have been a few reported cases of extragenital lichen sclerosus affecting the infraorbital area. To our knowledge, there are 7 documented cases of extragenital lichen sclerosus affecting the eyelid in medical literature.

Solitary fibrous tumour (SFT) is well-described in the urinary tract, but malignant examples are rare. We studied our experience with high grade malignant SFT of the prostate to address the degree of histological and immunophenotypical overlap with sarcomatoid carcinoma and prostatic stromal sarcoma. Four cases were identified from the surgical pathology consultation archives.

Stillbirth is one of the most common adverse pregnancy outcomes, occurring in 1 in 160 deliveries in the United States. In developed countries, the most prevalent risk factors associated with stillbirth are non-Hispanic black race, nulliparity, advanced maternal age, obesity, preexisting diabetes, chronic hypertension, smoking, alcohol use, having a pregnancy using assisted reproductive technology, multiple gestation, male fetal sex, unmarried status, and past obstetric history. Although some of these factors may be modifiable (such as smoking), many are not.

Special AT-rich sequence-binding protein 2 (SATB2) is an accurate marker for conventional colorectal carcinoma (CRC), although its sensitivity and specificity in mucinous tumors from the colon and other sites remains unknown. The objective of this study is to evaluate the accuracy of SATB2 expression detected by immunohistochemical assay, as a marker of primary CRC in mucinous adenocarcinomas. SATB2 immunohistochemical stains were performed on whole sections from 63 conventional CRCs (controls), 47 mucinous CRCs (mCRC), and 182 noncolorectal mucinous tumors.

Conflicting reports regarding whether high tumor-associated neutrophils (TAN) are associated with outcomes in colorectal cancer (CRC) exist. Previous investigators have counted TAN using non-neutrophil-specific immunohistochemistry (IHC) stains. We examined whether TAN levels as determined by multi-field manual counting would predict prognosis.

As the atmosphere warms, precipitation events are becoming less frequent but more intense. A three-year experiment in Kruger National Park, South Africa, found that fewer, more intense precipitation events encouraged woody plant encroachment. To test whether or not these treatment responses persisted over time, here, we report results from all five years of that experiment.

This case-series describes the 6 human infections with Onchocerca lupi, a parasite known to infect cats and dogs, that have been identified in the United States since 2013. Unlike cases reported outside the country, the American patients have not had subconjunctival nodules but have manifested more invasive disease (eg, spinal, orbital, and subdermal nodules). Diagnosis remains challenging in the absence of a serologic test.

Background: Evolution of a gas injected in a liquid is analyzed using the example of the behavior of oxygen molecules in water in which bubbles of gas molecules grow slowly by attachment of gas molecules to bubbles, the bubbles then associate and finally flow up to the liquid-gas interface and pass into the gas phase.

Results: Two methods are considered for gas injection in a liquid, insertion of individual molecules and injection of small gas bubbles via gas penetration through a porous material. The behavior of oxygen bubbles in water and growth of those bubbles is analyzed.

Background: Cutaneous infection with the mite Sarcoptes scabiei var. hominis is associated with epidermal and dermal changes. After noting superficial fibrin thrombi in two biopsies with scabies mites, we comprehensively reviewed the histopathologic findings in scabietic infections to determine the frequency of this finding.

Hepatocellular adenomas have recently been classified into four subtypes based on molecular findings: hepatocyte nuclear factor 1α (HNF1α) inactivated, inflammatory/telangiectatic, β-catenin activated, and unclassifiable. β-catenin-activated adenomas have the potential for malignant transformation and are thus important to recognize. Diffuse glutamine synthetase immunohistochemical positivity has been shown to be a reliable surrogate marker for β-catenin activation, though variations in staining patterns may be difficult to interpret.

Reconciling or somehow linking the macroscopic and microscopic approaches to chemical and physical processes has been a challenge unaddressed for many years. One approach, presented here, treats the issue by examining individual phenomena well described by a macro approach that fails when applied to small systems. The key to the approach is determining the approximate system size below which the breakdown of the macro description is observable.

A method for time series analysis of molecular dynamics simulation of a protein is presented. In this approach, wavelet analysis and principal component analysis are combined to decompose the spatio-temporal protein dynamics into contributions from a hierarchy of different time and space scales. Unlike the conventional Fourier-based approaches, the time-localized wavelet basis captures the vibrational energy transfers among the collective motions of proteins.

Medical examiner/coroner's (ME/C) offices investigate sudden, violent, and unexpected deaths, leaving those close to the deceased suffering traumatic loss with little in terms of support and counseling. We investigated a grief services program (GSP) at the New Mexico Office of the Medical Investigator (OMI) to better understand the needs of bereaved individuals, identify the services provided, and propose our findings as a model for others. A total of 1085 contacts occurred over 1 year, with the majority occurring at OMI (60.

In recent years, several theoretical studies have indicated potentially interesting, even perhaps surprising phenomena that could be observed by experiment--but have not yet been studied in the laboratory. Here we give the background and motivation for two of these, with the admitted goal of stimulating those experimental studies. The two topics: (1) the production and study of amorphous alkali metal halide clusters; (2) Penning detachment, the analogue of the well-studied Penning ionization, but in which an electron is detached from a negative ion, rather than from a neutral atom, by energy transfer in collision with an excited atom.

Sets of finite-time Lyapunov exponents characterize the stability and instability of classically chaotic dynamical trajectories. Here we show that their sample distributions can contain subpopulations identifying different types of dynamics. In small isolated molecules these dynamics correspond to distinct elementary motions, such as isomerizations.

Formation of amyloid oligomers, the most toxic species of amyloids in degenerative diseases, is critically coupled to the interplay with surrounding water. The hydrophobic force driving the oligomerization causes water removal from interfaces, changing the surface-hydration properties. Here, we show that such effects alter the magnetic relaxation response of local water in ways that may enable oligomer detection.

Background: Pancreatic β cells respond to chronic hyperglycemia by increasing the synthesis of proinsulin (the precursor molecule of insulin). Prolonged stimulations lead to accumulation of misfolded proinsulin in the secretory track, delayed insulin secretion, and release of unprocessed proinsulin in the blood. The molecular mechanisms connecting the state of endoplasmic reticulum overloading with the efficiency of proinsulin to insulin conversion remain largely unknown.
