CD45-PET is a robust, non-invasive tool for imaging inflammation.

Imaging inflammation holds immense potential for advancing the diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of many conditions. The lack of a specific and sensitive positron emission tomography (PET) probe to detect inflammation is a critical challenge. To bridge this gap, we present CD45-PET imaging, which detects inflammation with exceptional sensitivity and clarity in several preclinical models.

Syphilis infection prevalence in the Middle East and North Africa: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

Background: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection (STI) that can be prevented and effectively treated; yet it continues to be a cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide. There is a limited understanding of the epidemiology of syphilis in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) region.

Methods: A systematic review conducted up to April 30, 2024 assessed the prevalence of syphilis and followed PRISMA guidelines, without language and date restrictions.

Background: Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) has the highest sexually transmitted infection (STI) prevalence globally, but information about trends and geographic variation is limited by sparse aetiologic studies, particularly among men. This systematic review assessed chlamydia, gonorrhoea, and trichomoniasis prevalence by sex, sub-region, and year, and estimated male-to-female prevalence ratios for SSA.

Methods: We searched Embase, MEDLINE, Global Health, PubMed, and African Index Medicus for studies measuring STI prevalence among general populations from January 1, 2000, to September 17, 2024.

Estimated global and regional incidence and prevalence of herpes simplex virus infections and genital ulcer disease in 2020: mathematical modelling analyses.

Objectives: Genital herpes simplex virus (HSV) type 1 and 2 infections are lifelong and can cause symptomatic genital ulcer disease (GUD). HSV-2 almost always causes sexually transmitted genital infection, while HSV-1 mainly causes oral infection but can be sexually transmitted to cause genital infection. This study estimated genital infection with both HSV types and associated GUD globally in 2020, breaking down the data by WHO region and sex for females and males.

A new Oreolalax (Anura: Megophryidae) from the Hoang Lien Range, northwest Vietnam.

The megophryid genus Oreolalax is comprised of 19 species, most of which are endemic to China. A single species, Oreolalax sterlingae, is the only member of the genus known from Vietnam. During fieldwork on Mount Po Ma Lung in the Hoang Lien Range of northwest Vietnam, we encountered individuals of both Oreolalax sterlingae and another, morphologically divergent species of Oreolalax.

CAR T cell therapy has revolutionized the treatment of a spectrum of blood-related malignancies. However, treatment responses vary among cancer types and patients. Accurate monitoring of CAR T cell dynamics is crucial for understanding and evaluating treatment efficacy.

Incorporating citizen science into IUCN Red List assessments.

Many citizen scientists are highly motivated to help address the current extinction crisis. Their work is making valuable contributions to protecting species by raising awareness, identifying species occurrences, assessing population trends, and informing direct management actions, such as captive breeding. However, clear guidance is lacking about how to use existing citizen science data sets and how to design effective citizen science programs that directly inform extinction risk assessments and resulting conservation actions based on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria.

A CAR enhancer increases the activity and persistence of CAR T cells.

Although chimeric antigen receptor (CAR) T cell therapies have demonstrated promising clinical outcomes, durable remissions remain limited. To extend the efficacy of CAR T cells, we develop a CAR enhancer (CAR-E), comprising a CAR T cell antigen fused to an immunomodulatory molecule. Here we demonstrate this strategy using B cell maturation antigen (BCMA) CAR T cells for the treatment of multiple myeloma, with a CAR-E consisting of the BCMA fused to a low-affinity interleukin 2 (IL-2).

Prospective, international, multisite comparison of platelet isolation techniques for genome-wide transcriptomics: communication from the SSC of the ISTH.

Genome-wide platelet transcriptomics is increasingly used to uncover new aspects of platelet biology and as a diagnostic and prognostic tool. Nevertheless, platelet isolation methods for transcriptomic studies are not standardized, introducing challenges for cross-study comparisons, data integration, and replication. In this prospective multicenter study, called "Standardizing Platelet Transcriptomics for Discovery, Diagnostics, and Therapeutics in the Thrombosis and Hemostasis Community (STRIDE)" by the International Society on Thrombosis and Haemostasis Scientific and Standardization Committees, we assessed how 3 of the most commonly used platelet isolation protocols influence metrics from next-generation bulk RNA sequencing and functional assays.

Introduction: Aerosol mitigation equipment implemented due to COVID-19 has increased noise levels in the operating room (OR) during otolaryngological procedures. Intraoperative sound levels may potentially place personnel at risk for occupational hearing loss. This study hypothesized that cumulative intraoperative noise exposures with aerosol mitigation equipment exceed recommended occupational noise exposure levels.

Broad-scale pesticide screening finds anticoagulant rodenticide and legacy pesticides in Australian frogs.

Pesticide contamination poses a significant threat to non-target wildlife, including amphibians, many of which are already highly threatened. This study assessed the extent of pesticide exposure in dead frogs collected during a mass mortality event across eastern New South Wales, Australia between July 2021 and March 2022. Liver tissue from 77 individual frogs of six species were analysed for >600 legacy and contemporary pesticides, including rodenticides.

Gender Representation Among Academic US Radiation Oncology Department Chairs: Who are They?

Purpose: Women are underrepresented in academic radiation oncology (RO), particularly in leadership positions. In this study, we sought to better understand the characteristics of individuals who currently serve as academic RO chairpersons at institutions with an associated Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education-accredited RO residency training program.

Methods And Materials: We created a database of academic RO chairpersons in the United States by using publicly available sources, including residency training program websites, hospital/institutional websites, Doximity, LinkedIn, the American Society for Radiation Oncology (ASTRO) website, the American College of Radiation Oncology website, and the National Plan and Provider Enumeration System National Provider Identifier Registry.

Osteopathic Manipulative Treatment During Post-operative Recovery: A Scoping Review.

Systematic assessment of the brown tree frog (Anura: Pelodryadidae: Litoria ewingii) reveals two endemic species in South Australia.

The brown tree frog (Litoria ewingii) is a relatively widespread, commonly encountered pelodryadid frog from south-eastern Australia, known for its characteristic whistling call. The distribution of Litoria ewingii spans over more than 350,000 km2, encompassing a range of moist temperate habitats, and is fragmented by well-known biogeographic barriers. A preliminary analysis of mitochondrial DNA sequences revealed evidence for deep phylogenetic structure between some of these fragmented populations.

Ignored and undervalued in public health: a systematic review of health state utility values associated with syphilis infection.

Background: Syphilis is a sexually transmitted infection causing significant global morbidity and mortality. To inform policymaking and economic evaluation studies for syphilis, we summarised utility and disability weights for health states associated with syphilis.

Methods: We conducted a systematic review, searching six databases for economic evaluations and primary valuation studies related to syphilis from January 2000 to February 2022.

Academic and Geographic Employment Outcomes for Graduating Residents in Radiation Oncology: 2015-2022.

Purpose: Little is known about how the academic and geographic employment outcomes of new radiation oncology (RO) graduates have changed over time. In this study, we sought to trace the evolution of these outcomes for all RO residents who graduated between 2015 and 2022.

Methods And Materials: Using publicly available data sources, we identified the first permanent, clinical employment positions accepted by graduating members of the RO residency classes of 2015 to 2022.

Revision of Litoria rothii (Anura: Pelodryadidae) from northern Australia.

Litoria rothii is a widespread pelodryadid frog with a charismatic laughing advertisement call, distributed across the Australian Monsoon Tropics and southern New Guinea. Given its large distribution spanning well-known biogeographic barriers, variation in male advertisement calls and the prevalence of unresolved species complexes in the Australian frog fauna, we examine the genetic, morphological and acoustic diversity in the species from across its range. Our analyses reveal the presence of a previously unrecognised species in western parts of the range of L.

Searching for Structure: Characterizing the Protein Conformational Landscape with Clustering-Based Algorithms.

The identification and characterization of the main conformations from a protein population are a challenging and inherently high-dimensional problem. Here, we evaluate the performance of the Secondary sTructural Ensembles with machine LeArning (StELa) double-clustering method, which clusters protein structures based on the relationship between the φ and ψ dihedral angles in a protein backbone and the secondary structure of the protein, thus focusing on the local properties of protein structures. The classification of states as vectors composed of the clusters' indices arising naturally from the Ramachandran plot is followed by the hierarchical clustering of the vectors to allow for the identification of the main features of the corresponding free energy landscape (FEL).
