The strong bond that is formed between ewe and lamb after parturition is important for lamb survival. Evidence exists that the ewe mainly employs olfactory recognition cues to distinguish her lamb from other lambs in the flock. We have found that volatile organic compounds in the wool of Merino lambs that presumably constitute the neonatal recognition cue in sheep undergo temporal changes, at least during the first 100 days of their lives.

The objective of this article is to create awareness amongst speech-language pathologists and audiologists in South Africa regarding the difference between the sound systems of Germanic languages and the sound systems of South African Bantu languages. A brief overview of the sound systems of two Bantu languages, namely isiZulu and Setswana, is provided. These two languages are representative of the Nguni language group and the Sotho group respectively.

The opioid system influences learning and memory processes. However, neural mechanisms underlying the modulation of hippocampal activity by opioid receptors remain largely unknown. Here, we compared how mu and delta receptors operate within the mouse CA1 network, and used knock-in mice expressing functional delta opioid receptors fused to the green fluorescent protein (DOR-eGFP) to determine how delta opioid receptor-expressing interneurons integrate within the hippocampal circuitry.

Objectives: To evaluate the influence of planning endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) with a three-dimensional (3D) workstation on early and midterm outcomes.

Methods: All patients undergoing infrarenal EVAR performed between 2006 and 2009 at our institution were included in the current study. Prior to 2008 (group 1), endograft sizing was performed by interrogation of computed tomography angiography axial images.

Article Synopsis
  • The study analyzes the genetic and phenotypic differences between two mouse inbred strains, C57BL/6J and C57BL/6N, which are widely used in genetic research.
  • Researchers performed comprehensive genome sequence comparisons, identifying coding variants and structural changes that differentiate the two strains, as well as significant phenotypic variations across multiple biological systems.
  • The findings suggest that the identified genetic differences could influence how mutations manifest in these strains, offering potential insights into underlying genetic mechanisms and candidate genes for further investigation.

Aim: to evaluate the outcomes of EVAR performed with a new generation of bifurcated endografts and limbs.

Methods: prospectively collected data from fifty consecutive patients with abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA) treated at our institution with a Low Profile Zenith(®) bifurcated body/Zenith(®) Spiral-Z legs combo were analysed. AngioCT scans and Ultrasound exams were performed prior to discharge.

High relatedness promotes the evolution of sociality because potentially costly cooperative behaviours are directed towards kin. However, societies, such as those of social insects, also benefit from genetic diversity, e.g.

Amphiphilic cyclodextrins, with a cholesterol anchor (βChol) or an aspartic acid moiety esterified by two lauryl acyl chains (βDLC), were designed to combine the inclusion ability of the cyclodextrin cavity with the carrier properties of model membranes. Their insertion in phosphatidylcholine bilayers induces a marked lateral phase separation into a pure lipid phase and a cyclodextrin-rich phase (LCD), organized as a 2D cyclodextrin network stabilized by intermolecular hydrogen bonds between the saccharide headgroups at the membrane surface (Roux, M.; Perly, B.

Starting from (Z)-1-trimethylsilyl-3-bromopenta-2,4-diene, a lithium-bromine exchange reaction followed by addition onto carbonyl compounds provided the corresponding dienyl alcohols. A Peterson-type γ-elimination promoted by a catalytic amount of trimethylsilyl triflate cross-conjugated gave triene systems ([3]dendralene) which rapidly reacted with the appropriate dienophiles to yield tandem intermolecular Diels-Alder cycloadducts.

Inflammatory pseudotumor (IPT) of the liver is a rare benign lesion for which imaging diagnosis remains a challenge. We report the case of a 39-year-old Algerian woman, who presented epigastric pains combined with fever and jaundice. Ultrasound, CT scan and MRI showed the presence of a 10 cm-long multi-septated cystic mass of the left lobe, with peripheral enhancement.

We describe in the current paper an experimental and computational study of three methylated uracils, in particular, the 5,6-dimethyl-, 1,3,5-trimethyl-, and 1,3,5,6-tetramethyl derivatives. The values of the standard (p(0) = 0.1 MPa) molar enthalpies of formation in the gas phase at T = 298.

It has been reported that fetal lymphoid progenitor cells are acquired during gestation and are able to develop in the maternal mouse thymus into functional T cells. Moreover, previous pregnancies increase the number of fetal cells in the mother. In the present study, we investigated whether mouse pregnancy induces changes in T lymphocyte subsets in the maternal thymus.

Receptor-like kinases (RLKs) are surface localized, transmembrane receptors comprising a large family of well-studied kinases. RLKs signal through their transmembrane and juxtamembrane domains with the aid of various interacting partners and downstream components. The N-terminal extracellular domain defines ligand specificity, and RLK families are sub-classed according to this domain.

Tight regulation of the visual response is essential for photoreceptor function and survival. Visual response dysregulation often leads to photoreceptor cell degeneration, but the causes of such cell death are not well understood. In this study, we investigated a fatty acid transport protein (fatp) null mutation that caused adult-onset and progressive photoreceptor cell death.

Plant mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) cascades generally transduce extracellular stimuli into cellular responses. These stimuli include the perception of pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) by host transmembrane pattern recognition receptors which trigger MAPK-dependent innate immune responses. In the model Arabidopsis, molecular genetic evidence implicates a number of MAPK cascade components in PAMP signaling, and in responses to immunity-related phytohormones such as ethylene, jasmonate, and salicylate.

Patient records have been developed to support the physician-oriented medical activity scheme. One recommended yet rarely studied alternative, expected to improve healthcare, is the patient-centered record. We propose a development framework for such record, which includes domain-specific database models at the conceptual level, analyzing the fundamental role of complementary information destined to ensure proper patient understanding of related clinical situations.

Social-economic conditions, access to care and prevention are important indicators of a population's health status. These factors partly explain the level of health and the low life expectancy of travelling people. By taking into account the difference in lifestyle and the material and psychological conditions of travellers, areas to explore for improving the provision of care can be envisaged.

Very good linear correlations between experimental and calculated enthalpies of formation in the gas phase (G3(MP2)//B3LYP and G3) for 48 thiophene derivatives have been obtained. These correlations permit a correction of the calculated enthalpies of formation in order to estimate more reliable "experimental" values for the enthalpies of formation of substituted thiophenes, check the reliability of experimental measurements, and also predict the enthalpies of formation of new thiophenes that are not available in the literature. Moreover, the difference between the enthalpies of formation of isomeric thiophenes with the same substituent in positions 2 and 3 of the ring has been analyzed.

Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in fermented honeybush, Cyclopia subternata, were sampled by means of a high-capacity headspace sample enrichment probe (SEP) and analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Stereochemistry was determined by means of enantioselective GC-MS with derivatized β-cyclodextrin columns as chiral selectors. A total of 183 compounds, the majority of which are terpenoids (103; 56%), were identified by comparing their mass spectra and retention indices with those of reference compounds or tentatively identified by comparison with spectral library or literature data.

To make full use of research data, the bioscience community needs to adopt technologies and reward mechanisms that support interoperability and promote the growth of an open 'data commoning' culture. Here we describe the prerequisites for data commoning and present an established and growing ecosystem of solutions using the shared 'Investigation-Study-Assay' framework to support that vision.
