Tuneable phase plates for free electrons are a highly active area of research. However, their widespread implementation, similar to that of spatial light modulators in light optics, has been hindered by both conceptual and technical challenges. A specific technical challenge involves the need to minimize obstruction of the electron beam by supporting films and electrodes.

By means of numerical simulations, we demonstrate the innovative use of computational ghost imaging in transmission electron microscopy to retrieve images with a resolution that overcomes the limitations imposed by coherent aberrations. The method requires measuring the intensity on a single pixel detector with a series of structured illuminations. The success of the technique is improved if the probes are made to resemble the sample and the patterns cover the area of interest evenly.

The experience of the COVID-19 pandemic showed the importance of timely monitoring of admissions to the ICU admissions. The ability to promptly forecast the epidemic impact on the occupancy of beds in the ICU is a key issue for adequate management of the health care system.Despite this, most of the literature on predictive COVID-19 models in Italy has focused on predicting the number of infections, leaving trends in ordinary hospitalizations and ICU occupancies in the background.

The following article presents the relevant and unprecedented bioethical and biolaw issues posed by the SARS-COV-2 pandemic and summarizes the initiatives adopted by the Italian Society of Anesthesia and Resuscitation (SIAARTI) as well as by the Veneto Region ICU Network. Since the initial phase of the pandemic, in March 2020, there has been a strong appeal from both SIAARTI and the Veneto Region ICU Network to consider "the appropriate intensive treatment." During the pandemic, the principle of proportionality must be applied, in compliance with the main principle in bioethics.

The best timing for endotracheal intubation in patients with coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) hypoxemic acute respiratory failure (hARF) remains debated. Aim of this study is to compare the outcomes of COVID-19 patients with hARF receiving either a trial of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) or intubated with no prior attempt of NIV ("straight intubation"). All consecutive patients admitted to the 25 participating ICUs were included and divided in two groups: the "straight intubation" group and the "NIV" group.

We report on the automatic alignment of a transmission electron microscope equipped with an orbital angular momentum sorter using a convolutional neural network. The neural network is able to control all relevant parameters of both the electron-optical setup of the microscope and the external voltage source of the sorter without input from the user. It can compensate for mechanical and optical misalignments of the sorter, in order to optimize its spectral resolution.

Introduction: Sierra Leone, one of the countries with the highest maternal and perinatal mortality in the world, launched its first National Emergency Medical Service (NEMS) in 2018. We carried out a countrywide assessment to analyse NEMS operational times for obstetric emergencies in respect the access to timely essential surgery within 2 hours. Moreover, we evaluated the relationship between operational times and maternal and perinatal mortality.

The efficacy of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) in acute respiratory failure secondary to SARS-CoV-2 infection remains controversial. Current literature mainly examined efficacy, safety and potential predictors of NIV failure provided out of the intensive care unit (ICU). On the contrary, the outcomes of ICU patients, intubated after NIV failure, remain to be explored.

Background: Pathophysiological features of coronavirus disease 2019-associated acute respiratory distress syndrome (COVID-19 ARDS) were indicated to be somewhat different from those described in nonCOVID-19 ARDS, because of relatively preserved compliance of the respiratory system despite marked hypoxemia. We aim ascertaining whether respiratory system static compliance (Crs), driving pressure (DP), and tidal volume normalized for ideal body weight (VT/kg IBW) at the 1st day of controlled mechanical ventilation are associated with intensive care unit (ICU) mortality in COVID-19 ARDS.

Methods: Observational multicenter cohort study.

The orbital angular momentum (OAM) sorter is an electron optical device for the measurement of an electron's OAM. It is based on two phase elements, which are referred to as an "unwrapper" and a "corrector" and are located in Fourier conjugate planes. The simplest implementation of the sorter is based on electrostatic phase elements, such as a charged needle for the unwrapper and electrodes with alternating charges or potentials for the corrector.

The component of orbital angular momentum (OAM) in the propagation direction is one of the fundamental quantities of an electron wave function that describes its rotational symmetry and spatial chirality. Here, we demonstrate experimentally an electrostatic sorter that can be used to analyze the OAM states of electron beams in a transmission electron microscope. The device achieves postselection or sorting of OAM states after electron-material interactions, thereby allowing the study of new material properties such as the magnetic states of atoms.

The purpose of cardiopulmonary resuscitation after sudden cardiac arrest is to restore minimal blood flow to provide oxygen to the brain and other vital organs. Chest compressions and external defibrillation are the first line for circulatory support. Although early defibrillation is the main factor influencing survival, cardiopulmonary resuscitation must be characterized by high-quality external chest compressions.

Myoglobin (Mb) and hemoglobin have the biological ability to carry/store oxygen (O2), a property which requires its heme iron atom to be in the ferrous--Fe(II)--state. However, the thermodynamically stable state in the presence of O2 is Fe(III) and thus the oxidation rate of a globin is a critical parameter related to its function. Mb has been extensively studied and many mutants have been characterized regarding its oxygen mediated oxidation (i.

Background: Despite early cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) by bystanders and early advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) maneuvers, some patients present to the emergency department with persistent cardiac arrest caused by a coronary artery occlusion. Although emergency percutaneous intervention (PCI) has been shown to be effective in improving survival, transporting patients in cardiac arrest to the hospital is not considered to be effective, due to the poor quality of CPR in the ambulance. In the case reported here, a mechanical chest compression device was used while transporting the patient by helicopter emergency medical services (HEMS).
