Clonal bacterial populations exhibit various forms of heterogeneity, including co-occurrence of cells with different morphological traits, biochemical properties, and gene expression profiles. This heterogeneity is prevalent in a variety of environments. For example, the productivity of large-scale industrial fermentations and virulence of infectious diseases are shaped by cell population heterogeneity and have a direct impact on human life.

Sequencing studies have shed some light on the pathogenesis of progression from smouldering multiple myeloma (SMM) and symptomatic multiple myeloma (MM). Given the scarcity of smouldering samples, little data are available to determine which translational programmes are dysregulated and whether the mechanisms of progression are uniform across the main molecular subgroups. In this work, we investigated 223 SMM and 1348 MM samples from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences (UAMS) for which we had gene expression profiling (GEP).

Meeting international commitments to protect 17% of terrestrial ecosystems worldwide will require >3 million square kilometers of new protected areas and strategies to create those areas in a way that respects local communities and land use. In 2000-2016, biological and social scientists worked to increase the protected proportion of Peru's largest department via 14 interdisciplinary inventories covering >9 million hectares of this megadiverse corner of the Amazon basin. In each landscape, the strategy was the same: convene diverse partners, identify biological and sociocultural assets, document residents' use of natural resources, and tailor the findings to the needs of decision-makers.

Optimizing Medical-Legal Partnerships in Pediatric Psychology to Reduce Health Disparities.

Objective: To provide a topical review of the literature on the use of medical-legal partnerships (MLPs) to address social determinants of health (SDH) needs as a means to reduce health disparities, and to make recommendations for the implementation of MLPs within pediatric psychologists' clinical work, research, and training.

Methods: We conducted a topical review of the research on the intersection of MLPs, SDH needs, and health disparities among pediatric populations. Given the scarcity of literature available, both empirical and theoretical articles were included in the review.

Optical imaging is commonly performed with either a camera and wide-field illumination or with a single detector and a scanning collimated beam; unfortunately, these options do not exist at all wavelengths. Single-pixel imaging offers an alternative that can be performed with a single detector and wide-field illumination, potentially enabling imaging applications in which the detection and illumination technologies are immature. However, single-pixel imaging currently suffers from low imaging rates owing to its reliance on configurable spatial light modulators, generally limited to 22 kHz rates.

The Impact of a Pediatric Medical-Legal Partnership on Pediatric Providers: A Qualitative Study.

Objective: Medical-Legal Partnerships (MLPs) integrate medical and legal care to address prevalent health-harming legal needs (HHLN) among socioeconomically marginalized populations. MLPs address a diverse array of social determinants of health (SDOH) and have been shown to positively impact children's health. Less is known, however, about how MLPs affect health care providers.

Novel Use of Extracorporeal Blood Purification for Treatment of Severe, Refractory Neurotoxicity After Chimeric Antigen Receptor T-Cell Therapy-A Case Report.

Background: Chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapies (CAR-T) are transforming the treatment of B-cell leukemias and lymphomas. Cytokine release syndrome and immune effector cell-associated neurotoxicity syndrome represent common, potentially life-threatening toxicities from chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy treatment.

Case Summary: We present a 53-year-old patient with primary refractory high-grade B-cell lymphoma who developed severe, refractory neurotoxicity following chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy but exhibited complete recovery after extracorporeal blood purification with CytoSorb (CytoSorbents, Monmouth Junction, NJ).

Exercise and the immune system: taking steps to improve responses to cancer immunotherapy.

The remarkable success of cancer immunotherapies has provided new hope to cancer patients. Unfortunately, a significant proportion of patients remain unable to respond to immunotherapy or maintain durable clinical responses. The lack of objective responses likely results from profound immune dysfunction often observed in patients with cancer.

Artifacts and errors in the measurement of the stickiness of liquid foods with tack tests.

We encounter stickiness in many areas of our daily life and as humans, we are able to discriminate different levels of stickiness. Yet attempts to measure stickiness with instruments have been challenging. One of the commonest approaches has been the "tack test" in which a probe is brought into contact with the sticky food and then pulled away while measuring the resisting force-various indices, such as the maximum force or the area below the force curve have been used to describe stickiness.

Inorganic pyrophosphate is reduced in patients with systemic sclerosis.

Objective: The pathogenesis of calcinosis cutis, a disabling complication of SSc, is poorly understood and effective treatments are lacking. Inorganic pyrophosphate (PPi) is a key regulator of ectopic mineralization, and its deficiency has been implicated in ectopic mineralization disorders. We therefore sought to test the hypothesis that SSc may be associated with reduced circulating PPi, which might play a pathogenic role in calcinosis cutis.

Development of tropical mixed juice with low added-sugar content: Sensory and nutritional aspects.

The aim of the present study was to develop a mixed tropical fruit juice of cashew apple, acerola and melon with low added-sugar content considering sensory and nutritional aspects. Five formulations were developed varying the concentration of the different fruits. A total of 172 consumers rated their overall liking using a 9-point hedonic scale and described their sensory characteristics using a Check-all-that-apply question.

Live virus vaccination of pediatric solid organ transplant candidates within 1 month prior to transplantation: A multicenter experience.

Background: Solid organ transplant (SOT) recipients are at increased risk of vaccine-preventable illness due to the high degree of immunosuppression required following transplantation. The current recommendation is to vaccinate with live attenuated vaccines, including Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) and Varicella (VAR) vaccines, at least 4 weeks prior to transplant. However, data to support the time interval between vaccine and transplant are limited.

Towards development of core domain sets for short term and long term studies of calcium pyrophosphate crystal deposition (CPPD) disease: A framework paper by the OMERACT CPPD working group.

Introduction: Although calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) is common, there are no published outcome domains or validated measurement instruments for CPPD studies. In this paper, we describe the framework for development of the Outcome Measures in Rheumatology (OMERACT) CPPD Core Domain Sets.

Methods: The OMERACT CPPD working group performed a scoping literature review and qualitative interview study.

Application of preliminary high-pressure processing for improving bioactive characteristics and reducing antigenicity of whey protein hydrolysates.

This study investigated the use of Novo Pro-D® (NPD) and Ficin (FC) as alternative proteases for the production of bioactive peptides with reduced allergenicity from whey protein concentrate (WPC). In addition, the use of high hydrostatic pressure processing as pre-treatment of WPC and its impact on the final characteristics of hydrolysates were also evaluated. NPD treatments generated hydrolysates with a 98% reduction of soluble proteins, greater in vitro antioxidant capacity, and less immunoreactivity when compared to FC ones.

Trastuzumab-induced cardiotoxicity: a review of clinical risk factors, pharmacologic prevention, and cardiotoxicity of other HER2-directed therapies.

Purpose: Despite great success as a targeted breast cancer therapy, trastuzumab use may be complicated by heart failure and loss of left ventricular contractile function. This review summarizes the risk factors, imaging, and prevention of cardiotoxicity associated with trastuzumab and other HER2-targeted therapies.

Findings: Cardiovascular disease risk factors, advanced age, and previous anthracycline treatment predispose to trastuzumab-induced cardiotoxicity (TIC), with anthracycline exposure being the most significant risk factor.

Multidisciplinary Management of Adolescent and Young Adult Patients with Hodgkin Lymphoma.

Successful management of adolescent and young adult patients with Hodgkin lymphoma (HL) requires a multidisciplinary approach to care with special attention paid to the unique medical, logistical, and psychosocial challenges faced by this group. The emotional and social changes and big life transitions that occur between the ages of 15 and 39 result in a broad scope of supportive care needs that differ from children or adults in similar circumstances. Currently, care of adolescent and young adult (AYA) patients with HL may be fractured across the pediatric-adult cancer care continuum resulting in this group being less well studied than pediatric or adult patients in general.

A proposed service model for early identification of autism spectrum disorder in ethnic communities in Southern Israel.

Early autism spectrum disorder (ASD) detection is a precondition for effective intervention and facilitates significant improvements in functioning. In Israel, toddlers undergo general developmental screening by public health nurses (PHNs) at maternal and child health centres (MCHCs). Nevertheless, there are disparities among ethnic groups in the reported incidence of ASD.

Association between oral contraceptives and serious infections: A population-based cohort study.

Aims: Oral contraceptives (OC)s are commonly used worldwide. In a recent study, we showed that the use of OCs is associated with an increased risk for neutropenia. We aimed to investigate the clinical implications of this finding by examining the infection rates of 4 serious infections before, during and after OCs.

Identifying Potential Classification Criteria for Calcium Pyrophosphate Deposition Disease: Item Generation and Item Reduction.

Objective: Classification criteria for calcium pyrophosphate deposition (CPPD) disease will facilitate clinical research on this common crystalline arthritis. Our objective was to report on the first 2 phases of a 4-phase process for developing CPPD classification criteria.

Methods: CPPD classification criteria development is overseen by a 12-member steering committee.

Hepatic Wnt1 Inducible Signaling Pathway Protein 1 (WISP-1/CCN4) Associates with Markers of Liver Fibrosis in Severe Obesity.

Liver fibrosis is a critical complication of obesity-induced fatty liver disease. Wnt1 inducible signaling pathway protein 1 (WISP1/CCN4), a novel adipokine associated with visceral obesity and insulin resistance, also contributes to lung and kidney fibrosis. The aim of the present study was to investigate the role of CCN4 in liver fibrosis in severe obesity.
