Introduction: Patient Reported Outcome Measurement Information Systems (PROMIS) is increasingly being utilized across the United States as a patient reported outcome evaluation tool for a wide variety of musculoskeletal conditions. However, PROMIS Upper Extremity physical function (P-UE) has demonstrated limited responsiveness in the early postoperative period after total shoulder arthroplasty (TSA). The aim of this study is to determine if addition of PROMIS Pain Interference (P-Interference) or Pain Intensity (P-Intensity) scores improve the ability to detect postoperative changes in the one-year postoperative period following TSA.

Our hypothesis is that myoinositol and metformin in pregnant women with high-risk factors for glucose intolerance would reduce insulin resistance and consequently lower the incidence of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), a metabolic disorder of pregnancy characterized by maternal hyperglycemia due to deficient response to physiological insulin resistance, which may have a negative impact on perinatal outcome and long-term sequelae. In recent years, this pathology has become increasingly important given the global obesity epidemic and the delay in becoming pregnant, especially in industrialized countries. For this reason, the attempt to prevent, rather than cure, gestational diabetes is particularly important.

Few therapeutic options are available to treat COVID-19. The KEAP1/NRF2 pathway, the major redox-responsive pathway, has emerged as a potential therapeutic target for COVID-19 as it regulates redox homeostasis and inflammation that are altered during SARS-CoV-2 infection. Here, we characterized the effects of NRF2-agonist Sulfodyne, a stabilized natural Sulforaphane, in cellular and animal models of SARS-CoV-2 infection.

Using a new red blood cell (RBC) metabolite extraction protocol, we performed a metabolomic analysis on RBCs in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients treated or not with methotrexate (MTX), with the two following objectives: to compare the RBC metabolic profiles of MTX-naïve RA patients and healthy controls (HC), and to investigate whether RBC profiles before and after MTX treatment in RA differed between responders and non-responders. Plasma analysis was performed in parallel. Metabolites were extracted and identified in RBCs and plasma by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry.

There are numerous internal fixation (IF) options available for distal radius fractures (DRFs). The choice of fixation method depends on factors such as fracture morphology, soft tissue integrity, the patient's clinical status, and the surgeon's training. While volar plate fixation has become the primary approach for addressing these fractures, alternative IF methods like K-wire fixation, fragment-specific fixation, and dorsal bridge plating continue to be effective.

Background: Although Patient-Reported Outcomes Measurement Information System (PROMIS) Upper Extremity (P-UE) has been validated in upper extremity orthopedics, its ability to capture a patient's functional recovery after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair (aRCR), as measured by its responsiveness, is minimal in the early postoperative period. The primary purpose of this study is to determine if the addition of PROMIS Pain Intensity (P-Intensity) or Pain Interference (P-Interference) scores to PROMIS UE improves the responsiveness throughout the 1-year postoperative period after aRCR.

Methods: This prospective, longitudinal study included 100 patients who underwent aRCR.

Background:  Large defects of the lower lip often require free tissue coverage. Fasciocutaneous free flaps have been traditionally used, but innervated muscular free flaps may fundamentally address orbicularis oris deficiency and improve dynamic competence. This review aimed to determine if innervated muscular free flaps provided benefit over fasciocutaneous free flaps for reconstruction of defects of more than 50% of the lower lip.

Introduction: Patients with severe burn injuries are at risk of venous thromboembolism (VTE) and associated sequelae. Burn-injured patients may require larger doses of VTE prophylaxis so underdosing may occur with standard regimens. Monitoring anti-factor Xa (AFXa) levels may allow tailoring of dosage but is currently uncommon.

Introduction: Pelvic organs prolapse remains a significant health concern affecting millions of women worldwide. The use of native tissues to suspend the apex has acquired relevance in urogynecologic surgery. One of the most commonly used procedures performed without mesh is the technique described by Shull, consisting of suturing the vaginal apex to the uterosacral ligaments.

The Testicular Juvenile Granulosa Cell Tumor (JGCT) is a rare testicular neoplasm that appears in the first months of life as a painless testicular mass. Following an accurate radiological ultrasound diagnosis, through which the cystic appearance of the lesion is observed, and histological confirmation, showing follicular growth pattern and an immunoreactivity for inhibin, the treatment process involves, when feasible, conservative surgery. We present the case of a 2-months old infant with a bilateral JGCT of the testis and we review the classical findings of the patology.

FeRh alloys in the CsCl-type (B2) chemically ordered phase present an antiferromagnetic to ferromagnetic order transition around 370 K observed in bulk and continuous films but absent in nanoclusters. In this study, we investigate the thermal magnetic behavior of a thick film composed of assembled FeRh nanoclusters preformed in the gas phase. This work reveals a broad and asymmetric metamagnetic transition with a consequent residual magnetization at low temperature.

Background: Bone marrow aspirate (BMA), when combined with graft substitutes, has long been introduced as a promising alternative to iliac crest bone graft in spinal fusion. However, the use of BMA is limited by the absence of a standardized procedure, a structural texture, and the potential for diffusion away from the implant site. Recently, the potential use of a new formulation of BMA, named BMA clot, has been preclinically described.

Article Synopsis
  • Primary cardiac tumors are very rare, especially in children, with prevalence rates between 0.0017-0.28% noted in autopsy studies, highlighting the need for a standardized diagnostic approach due to limited case reports.
  • The initial diagnostic method typically used is transthoracic echocardiogram (TTE), valued for its accessibility, affordability, and non-invasive nature, which helps in identifying the location and features of the tumors.
  • Recently, cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (CMR) has gained prominence for its ability to accurately characterize soft tissue masses and assess their size and extent, making it a preferred imaging technique in pediatric cases while still allowing for adaptations based on patient needs.
