Pharmacokinetics of nanomedicines can be improved by a temporal blockade of mononuclear phagocyte system (MPS) through the interaction with other biocompatible nanoparticles. Liposomes are excellent candidates as blocking agents, but the efficiency of the MPS blockade can greatly depend on the liposome properties. Here, we investigated the dependence of the efficiency of the induced MPS blockadeandon the size of blocking liposomes in the 100-500 nm range.

We have successfully achieved selective and efficient functionalization of sheet edges in microcrystalline multilayer γ-graphyne through two methods: cross-coupling with residual bromide edge groups and copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC) with edge terminal alkyne groups. This modification significantly enhances the ease of mechanical exfoliation and dispersibility of the sheets of γ-graphyne. Specifically, C-grafted γ-graphyne forms stable dispersions in compatible organic solvents, allowing for the imaging of atomically thin layers of γ-graphyne for the first time.

Metastasis is a serious and often life-threatening condition, representing the leading cause of death among women with breast cancer (BC). Although the current clinical classification of BC is well-established, the addition of minimally invasive laboratory tests based on peripheral blood biomarkers that reflect pathological changes in the body is of utmost importance. In the current study, the serum proteome and lipidome profiles for 50 BC patients with (25) and without (25) metastasis were studied.

The molecular profile of a tumor is associated with its histological type and can be used both to study the mechanisms of tumor progression and to diagnose it. In this work, changes in the lipid profile of a malignant breast tumor and the adjacent tissue were studied. The potential possibility of determining the histological type of the tumor by its lipid profile was evaluated.

γ-Graphyne is the most symmetric sp/sp allotrope of carbon, which can be viewed as graphene uniformly expanded through the insertion of two-carbon acetylenic units between all the aromatic rings. To date, synthesis of bulk γ-graphyne has remained a challenge. We here report the synthesis of multilayer γ-graphyne through crystallization-assisted irreversible cross-coupling polymerization.

Extremely thermophilic bacteria from the genus can degrade polysaccharide components of plant cell walls and subsequently utilize the constituting mono- and oligosaccharides. Through metabolic engineering, ethanol and other industrially important end products can be produced. Previous experimental studies identified a variety of carbohydrate-active enzymes in model species Caldicellulosiruptor saccharolyticus and Caldicellulosiruptor bescii, while prior transcriptomic experiments identified their putative carbohydrate uptake transporters.

Aberrant methylation is strongly associated with development of cancer, but limited data exist on correlation between methylation and regional lymph node metastasis (RLNM). The aim of this research was to study using of methylation levels of WIF1, RASSF1A, CDO1 and MEST aberrant methylated genes in a primary breast cancer for prediction of regional lymph node metastases. We used MS-HRM (Methylation Sensitive High Resolution Melting) to assess methylation levels.

The tunable magnetic properties of amorphous ferromagnetic glass-coated microwires make them suitable for a wide range of applications. Accurate knowledge of the micromagnetic structure is highly desirable since it affects almost all magnetic properties. To select an appropriate wire-sample for a specific application, a deeper understanding of the magnetization reversal process is required, because it determines the measurable response (such as induced voltage waveform and its spectrum).

We studied biocompatibility and bioresorption of 3D-printed polylactide and polyglycolide tissue membranes. Ultrasound microscopy and histological examination showed that membranes fabricated of a copolymer of lactic and glycolic acids in a mass ratio of 1:9 are bioresorbed and have good biocompatibility with soft tissues (connective tissue, adipose tissue, and epithelium). An important feature of the copolymer membranes, which differs them from pure polylactide membranes, is the formation of a thin fibrous capsule that did not interfere its destruction by the mechanism of hydrolytic resorption.

Microtubules (MTs) often form a polarized array with minus ends anchored at the centrosome and plus ends extended toward the cell margins. Plus ends display behavior known as dynamic instability-transitions between rapid shortening and slow growth. It is known that dynamic instability is regulated locally to ensure entry of MTs into nascent areas of the cytoplasm, but details of this regulation remain largely unknown.

Current methods for the intraoperative determination of breast cancer margins commonly suffer from the insufficient accuracy, specificity and/or low speed of analysis, increasing the time and cost of operation as well the risk of cancer recurrence. The purpose of this study is to develop a method for the rapid and accurate determination of breast cancer margins using direct molecular profiling by mass spectrometry (MS). Direct molecular fingerprinting of tiny pieces of breast tissue (approximately 1 × 1 × 1 mm) is performed using a home-built tissue spray ionization source installed on a Maxis Impact quadrupole time-of-flight mass spectrometer (qTOF MS) (Bruker Daltonics, Hamburg, Germany).

A well-defined amphiphilic miktoarm polymer incorporating poly(vinylidene fluoride) (PVDF), polystyrene (PS), and poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) blocks was synthesized via a combination of atom-transfer radical polymerization (ATRP), iodine transfer radical polymerization (ITP), and copper-catalyzed azide-alkyne cycloaddition (CuAAC). Morphology and self-assembly of this star polymer were examined in organic solvents and in water. The aggregates formed in water were found to possess unusual frustrated topology due to immiscibility of PS and PVDF.

A strategy for arraying small gold nanoparticles on a mesoporous support modified with single-component or mixed self-assembled monolayers is described. The use of mixed surface modifiers allows easy access to a range of surface chemistries and modalities of interaction between nanoparticles and supports. A combination of thiol groups and linear semifluorinated chains effectively stabilized the nanoparticles against aggregation, while preserving their catalytic activity.

The electronic properties of sp/sp diamondoids in the crystalline state and in the gas phase are presented. Apparent differences in electronic properties experimentally observed by resonance Raman spectroscopy in the crystalline/gas phase and absorption measurements in the gas phase were investigated by density functional theory computations. Due to a reorganization of the molecular orbitals in the crystalline phase, the HOMO (highest occupied molecular orbital) and LUMO (lowest unoccupied molecular orbital) energy gaps are lowered significantly by 0.

During bone remodelling, osteoclasts induce chemotaxis of osteoblasts and yet maintain spatial segregation. We show that osteoclasts express the repulsive guidance factor Semaphorin 4D and induce contact inhibition of locomotion (CIL) in osteoblasts through its receptor Plexin-B1. To examine causality and elucidate how localized Plexin-B1 stimulation may spatiotemporally coordinate its downstream targets in guiding cell migration, we develop an optogenetic tool for Plexin-B1 designated optoPlexin.

Microtubule (MT)-based transport can be regulated through changes in organization of MT transport tracks, but the mechanisms that regulate these changes are poorly understood. In melanophores, aggregation of pigment granules in the cell center involves their capture by the tips of MTs growing toward the cell periphery, and granule aggregation signals facilitate capture by increasing the number of growing MT tips. This increase could be explained by stimulation of MT nucleation either on the centrosome or on the aggregate of pigment granules that gradually forms in the cell center.
