Characteristics of foreign-born abortion patients in the United States, 2021-2022.

Objectives: This study aimed to examine the characteristics of foreign-born abortion patients compared to those born in the Unites States and to explore whether barriers for foreign-born patients varied by state Medicaid coverage of abortion care.

Study Design: We used data from the Guttmacher Institute's 2021-2022 Abortion Patient Survey, a national sample of patients obtaining clinic-based abortion care in the United States. We compared sociodemographic characteristics of foreign- and US born respondents, as well as barriers to care.

Paediatric Prosthetic Knee Design: The Technical Requirements of a Swing Phase Control Mechanism are Correlated with Parameters of Childhood Growth.

Objective: There is a lack of innovation in affordable prosthetic knee joints for children. One significant reason is the absence of technical requirements which consider the foundation of childhood: growth. This study aims to develop and use a modelling tool to determine the technical requirements throughout childhood growth for one prosthetic knee design feature, a swing phase control mechanism (SPCM).

Effect of Menstrual Cycle and Hormonal Contraception on Musculoskeletal Health and Performance: Protocol for a Prospective Cohort Design and Cross-Sectional Comparison.

Background: Women of reproductive age experience cyclical variation in the female sex steroid hormones 17β-estradiol and progesterone during the menstrual cycle that is attenuated by some hormonal contraceptives. Estrogens perform a primary function in sexual development and reproduction but have nonreproductive effects on bone, muscle, and sinew tissues (ie, ligaments and tendons), which may influence injury risk and physical performance.

Objective: The purpose of the study is to understand the effect of the menstrual cycle and hormonal contraceptive use on bone and calcium metabolism, and musculoskeletal health and performance.

Characteristics and Circumstances of Adolescents Obtaining Abortions in the United States.

The purpose of this study is to describe the sociodemographic and situational circumstances of adolescents obtaining abortion in the United States prior to the decision. We use data from the Guttmacher Institute's 2021-2022 Abortion Patient Survey, a cross-sectional survey of 6698 respondents; our analytic sample includes 633 adolescents (<20 years), 2152 young adults (20-24 years), and 3913 adults (25+ years). We conducted bivariate analyses to describe the characteristics and logistical and financial circumstances of adolescents obtaining abortions in comparison to respondents in the other age groups.

An estimate of lifetime incidence of abortion in the United States using the 2021-2022 Abortion Patient Survey.

Objectives: The Guttmacher Institute estimated that, in 2014, 24% of US women of reproductive age would have an abortion by age 45 if the 2014 abortion rate was maintained. This study updates the estimated lifetime incidence of abortion in the year(s) just prior to the Dobbs decision, which removed federal protections for abortion.

Study Design: We used data from the Guttmacher Institute's 2021-2022 Abortion Patient Survey and population data for 2020 and 2021 from the Census Bureau, as well as abortion counts from the Guttmacher Institute's 2020 Abortion Provider Census, to estimate abortion rates, first-abortion rates, and cumulative abortion rates, all by age group.

Medicaid's role in alleviating some of the financial burden of abortion: Findings from the 2021-2022 Abortion Patient Survey.

Background: Medicaid is the most common type of health insurance held by abortion patients, but the Hyde amendment prohibits the use of Medicaid to pay for this care. Seventeen states allow state Medicaid funds to cover abortion.

Methods: We used data from a national sample of 6698 people accessing abortions at 56 facilities across the United States between June 2021 and July 2022.

Context: In light of the Dobbs v. Jackson Women's Health Organization decision overturning Roe v. Wade, the number of people who need to travel out of state for abortion is increasing as several states impose abortion bans.

The effects of a sleeve knee brace during stair negotiation in patients with symptomatic patellofemoral osteoarthritis.

Background: The patellofemoral joint is an important source of pain in knee osteoarthritis. Most biomechanical research in knee osteoarthritis has focused on the tibiofemoral joint during level walking. It is unknown what happens during stair negotiation in patients with patellofemoral joint osteoarthritis, a task commonly increasing pain.

EyeCee One preloaded intraocular lens: are patients with glaucoma more at risk?

Objective: The Medicine and Healthcare products Regulatory Agency reported links of raised intraocular pressure (IOP) with recently implanted EyeCee One intraocular lens (IOL). This work investigates if glaucomatous eyes were more susceptible to these postoperative IOP rises and if they required more intensive management.

Methods: Retrospective observational study of all phacoemulsification surgery with implanted EyeCee One IOL, performed between 1 October 2022 and 26 January 2023 inclusive.

A generic approach to construct pseudo components for oil weathering models.

Oil weathering models are essential for predicting the behavior of spilled oil in the environment. Most models use a "Pseudo Component" (PC) approach to represent the wide range of compounds found in petroleum products. Within the approach, rather than modeling each individual compound in an oil, a manageable number of PCs are developed that represent whole classes of compounds.

Characteristics of people obtaining medication vs procedural abortions in clinical settings in the United States: Findings from the 2021-2022 Abortion Patient Survey.

Objectives: This study aimed to compare the characteristics of people obtaining medication and procedural abortions in clinical settings in the United States.

Study Design: We conducted a cross-sectional survey of people obtaining abortions at a sample of 56 US facilities between June 2021 and July 2022. We restricted analyses to patients with pregnancies less than 11 weeks' gestation presenting at 43 clinics offering both medication and procedural abortion.

Characteristics of abortion patients in protected and restricted states accessing clinic-based care 12 months prior to the elimination of the federal constitutional right to abortion in the United States.

Background: As a result of the June 2022 decision of the United States (US) Supreme Court, as many as 24 states have, or are expected to, ban or severely restrict abortion. We provide baseline information about abortion patients living in different state environments prior to this decision.

Methods: We obtained surveys from 6674 women, transgender men, and other pregnancy capable individuals accessing abortion care at 56 facilities across the US between June 2021 and July 2022.

The use of technology to support lifestyle interventions in knee osteoarthritis: A scoping review.

Introduction: Technological tools that promote the adoption of physical activity to increase individuals' functional ability in knee osteoarthritis (OA) are desired to support lifestyle interventions. However, there is little consensus as to the current use of such supportive interventions for knee OA. The aim of this scoping review is therefore to provide an overview on the current use of technology within lifestyle interventions for individuals with knee OA.

Individuals with knee osteoarthritis demonstrate increased passive stiffness of the hip flexor muscles.

Background: People with knee osteoarthritis stand and walk with increased trunk flexion. This altered postural alignment increases hamstring activation, elevating mechanical knee loads during walking. Increased hip flexor stiffness may lead to increased trunk flexion.

The Immediate Effect of Backward Walking on External Knee Adduction Moment in Healthy Individuals.

Backward walking (BW) has been recommended as a rehabilitation intervention to prevent, manage, or improve diseases. However, previous studies showed that BW significantly increased the first vertical ground reaction force (GRF) during gait, which might lead to higher loading at the knee. Published reports have not examined the effects of BW on medial compartment knee loading.

Abortion incidence and service availability in the United States, 2020.

Background: This study provides a baseline assessment of abortion incidence and service delivery prior to Roe v. Wade being overturned.

Methods: We collected information from all facilities known to have provided abortion services in the United States in 2019 and 2020.

The effect of sex, stature, and limb length on the preferred walk-to-run transition speed.

Background: The preferred walk-to-run transition speed (PTS) for healthy adults is approximately 2 m∙s, however, PTS is influenced by anthropometric factors. Yet despite known sex differences in anthropometrics, studies have reported no sex differences in PTS.

Research Question: Do stature and limb length affect PTS in the same way for both male and female healthy adults?

Methods: Thirty-seven (19 female) non-injured adults volunteered for this study.
