The Scaptodrosophila genus represents a large group of drosophilids with a worldwide distribution and a predominance of species in Australia, but there is little information on the presence and impacts of Wolbachia endosymbionts in this group. Here we describe the first Wolbachia infection from this group, wClay isolated from Scaptodrosophila claytoni (van Klinken), a species from the east coast of Australia. The infection is polymorphic in natural populations, occurring at a frequency of around 6%-10%.

Compulsivity is a poorly understood transdiagnostic construct thought to underlie multiple disorders, including obsessive-compulsive disorder, addictions, and binge eating. Our current understanding of the causes of compulsive behavior remains primarily based on investigations into specific diagnostic categories or findings relying on one or two laboratory measures to explain complex phenotypic variance. This proof-of-concept study drew on a heterogeneous sample of community-based individuals (N = 45; 18-45 years; 25 female) exhibiting compulsive behavioral patterns in alcohol use, eating, cleaning, checking, or symmetry.

This response aims to expand on some of the issues raised by Keith Baverstock's The Gene: An Appraisal, especially on the evolution and nature of knowledge in living things. In contrast to the simple associationism envisaged in "genetic information", it emphasises the dynamic complexity and changeability of most natural environments, and, therefore, predictability based on underlying statistical structures. That seems to be the basis of the "cognitive" functions increasingly being reported about cellular, as well as more evolved, functions, and of the autonomous agency of organisms thriving creatively in complex environments.

How "success" is defined in clinical trials of deep brain stimulation (DBS) for refractory psychiatric conditions has come into question. We present a new method for quantifying signal quality of joint acoustic emissions (JAEs) from the knee during unloaded flexion/extension (F/E) exercises. For ten F/E cycles, JAEs were recorded, in a clinical setting, from 34 healthy knees and 13 with a meniscus tear (n=24 subjects). The recordings were first segmented by F/E cycle and described using time and frequency domain features.

Methods: A population-based analyses of fatal and non-fatal (hospitalisations and Accident Compensation Corporation [ACC] claims) unintentional drowning of children 0-4 years of age between 2005 and 2019 was conducted using DrownBase™ data. Analyses comprises calculation of linear temporal trends, crude drowning rates per 100,000 and relative risk (95% confidence interval) and ratios of fatal to non-fatal drowning.

Several lines of study suggest that peripheral metabolism of amyloid beta (Aß) is associated with risk for Alzheimer disease (AD). In blood, greater than 90% of Aß is complexed as an apolipoprotein, raising the possibility of a lipoprotein-mediated axis for AD risk. In this study, we report that genetic modification of C57BL/6J mice engineered to synthesise human Aß only in liver (hepatocyte-specific human amyloid (HSHA) strain) has marked neurodegeneration concomitant with capillary dysfunction, parenchymal extravasation of lipoprotein-Aß, and neurovascular inflammation.

RNA-based therapeutics are emerging as innovative options for cancer treatment, with microRNAs being attractive targets for therapy development. We previously implicated microRNA-642a-5p (miR-642a-5p) as a tumor suppressor in prostate cancer (PCa), and here we characterize its mode of action, using 22Rv1 PCa cells. In an in vivo xenograft tumor model, miR-642a-5p induced a significant decrease in tumor growth, compared to negative control.

Two of the most pressing questions in physics are the microscopic nature of the dark matter that comprises 84% of the mass in the Universe and the absence of a neutron electric dipole moment. These questions would be resolved by the existence of a hypothetical particle known as the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) axion. In this work, we probe the hypothesis that axions constitute dark matter, using the ABRACADABRA-10 cm experiment in a broadband configuration, with world-leading sensitivity.

Overactive bladder (OAB) is often treated with medications that block the cholinergic receptors in the bladder (known as anticholinergics). The effect of this medication class on cognition and risk of dementia has been increasingly studied over the past 40 years after initial studies suggested that the anticholinergic medication class could affect memory. Short-term randomized clinical trials demonstrated that the administration of the anticholinergic oxybutynin leads to impaired memory and attention, and large, population-based studies showed associations between several different anticholinergic medications and dementia.
