Spatial interpolation methods for nonstationary plume data.

Plume interpolation consists of estimating contaminant concentrations at unsampled locations using the available contaminant data surrounding those locations. The goal of ground water plume interpolation is to maximize the accuracy in estimating the spatial distribution of the contaminant plume given the data limitations associated with sparse monitoring networks with irregular geometries. Beyond data limitations, contaminant plume interpolation is a difficult task because contaminant concentration fields are highly heterogeneous, anisotropic, and nonstationary phenomena.

Evaluation of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitor use in patients with type 2 diabetes in a state managed care plan.

Objective: To compare angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitor use in patients with type 2 diabetes at 1 year and 3 years after guidelines were published.

Study Design: Retrospective database review.

Patients And Methods: The drug utilization review database of a state managed care plan was accessed to retrieve 2 random samples of 500 patients each.

Mutational analysis of evolutionarily conserved ACTH residues.

alpha-Melanocyte stimulating hormone (MSH) and adrenocorticotropin (ACTH)1-24, the minimal ACTH sequence required for full activity, differ only by the 10 C-terminal amino acids of ACTH1-24. Interestingly, these ten C-terminal residues have been highly conserved throughout vertebrate evolution. To understand the functional constraints of these 10 amino acids we analyzed the effects of mutating these residues on steroidogenic activity in vivo and in vitro.

A genome-screen of a large twin cohort reveals linkage for quantitative ultrasound of the calcaneus to 2q33-37 and 4q12-21.

Unlabelled: A genome-wide screen was performed on a large cohort of dizygous twin pairs to identify regions of the genome that contain QTL for QUS of bone. Suggestive linkage of QUS parameters to 2q33-37 and 4q12-21 highlighted these regions as potentially important for studies of genes that regulate bone.

This type of theory draws some of its support from experimental data on animals. However, nothing is known about differential responding of affricate/fricative continua by animals.

Characteristics and regional variations of patients with Barrett's oesophagus in the UK.

Objectives: To establish the patient characteristics and regional variation of Barrett's oesophagus in the UK in a large number (5717) of subjects. Barrett's oesophagus is a precursor lesion of oesophageal adenocarcinoma, the incidence of which is rising more rapidly than any other solid tumour.

Methods: Demographic data of 5717 Barrett's oesophagus patients from 27 UK centres, each registering at least 50 patients, with UK National Barrett's Oesophagus Registry, were analysed.

The effect of signaled reinforcement on rats' fixed-interval responding.

Four experiments examined the effect on rats' response rate of presenting a brief (500 ms) stimulus simultaneously with the delivery of food on fixed-interval (FI) schedules. In Experiment 1, reinforcement signals that were spatially diffuse (both tones and lights) elevated rates of responding, but responding was attenuated by localized visual stimuli. The remaining experiments examined the signal-induced potentiation of responding.

Use of blood culture as a nonlethal method for isolating bacteria from fish.

Simple nonlethal blood culture methodology, an alternative to euthanasia for diagnosing systemic bacterial infections in fish, is described. Blood was extracted from the caudal vein of 20 individuals of five fish species, incubated in brain-heart infusion broth, and then plated onto enriched blood agar. Nine of these fish were subsequently euthanized and necropsied for confirmatory tissue cultures.

Human causality judgments and response rates on DRL and DRH schedules of reinforcement.

The effect of various relationships between a response (an investment made in the context of a game) and an outcome (a return on the investment) on judgments of the causal effectiveness of the response was examined. In Experiment 1, response rates and causal judgments were higher for a differential-reinforcement-of-high-rate (DRH) schedule relative to a variable-ratio (VR) schedule with the same probability of outcome following a response. Response rates were also higher for a DRH than for a variable-interval schedule matched for reinforcement rate.

Adult Leydig cell steroidogenesis is dependent on LH but fetal Leydig cells can function independently of gonadotropin stimulation. To identify factors that may be involved in regulation of fetal Leydig cells expressed sequence tag libraries from fetal and adult testes were compared, and fetal-specific genes identified. The ACTH receptor [melanocortin type 2 receptor (Mc2r)] was identified within this fetal-specific group.

Alpha-melanocyte-stimulating hormone is a peripheral, integrative regulator of glucose and fat metabolism.

Asthma is a common, heterogeneous, complex disease accompanied by raised total and specific immunoglobulin-E (IgE) antibody levels. Despite numerous previous reports of linkage and association of asthma, atopy and serum IgE levels to genes within the 5q21-33 region, definitive, replicable results are still not available. We used the classical twin design to (i) estimate the relative contributions of genes and environment to variation in total IgE levels, (ii) assess genetic linkage, and (iii) examine allelic association of 11 microsatellite markers spanning the 5q21-33 region to total IgE.

Recruitment of older African Americans for survey research: a process evaluation of the community and church-based strategy in The Durham Elders Project.

Purpose: The disproportionately high burden of morbidity and mortality among older African Americans is due, in part, to a lack of understanding of the factors contributing to these outcomes. In order to more fully understand the factors that contribute to African American morbidity and mortality, researchers must identify strategies for increasing the inclusion of older African Americans in research on social and health phenomena.

Design And Methods: This article is a process evaluation describing the successes and challenges associated with recruitment of older African Americans into research.

Promoting the dignity of the child in hospital.

This article aims to deconstruct the concept of dignity in a way that is meaningful, in particular to nurses and other health workers who seek to promote the dignity of children in their care. Despite the emphasis in a variety of codes and policies to promote dignity, there is a lack of a clear definition of dignity in the literature. In particular there is little reference to dignity, theoretically or empirically, as it relates to children.

Comparison of genome screens for two independent cohorts provides replication of suggestive linkage of bone mineral density to 3p21 and 1p36.

Low bone mineral density (BMD) is a major risk factor for osteoporotic fracture. Studies of BMD in families and twins have shown that this trait is under strong genetic control. To identify regions of the genome that contain quantitative trait loci (QTL) for BMD, we performed independent genomewide screens, using two complementary study designs.

Costameres: repeating structures at the sarcolemma of skeletal muscle.

Costameres, structures at the plasma membrane of skeletal muscle, are present in a rectilinear array that parallels the organization of the underlying contractile apparatus. Costameres have three major functions: to keep the plasma membrane, or sarcolemma, aligned and in register with nearby contractile structures; to protect the sarcolemma against contraction-induced damage; and to transmit some of the forces of contraction laterally, to the extracellular matrix. These functions require that costameres link the contractile apparatus through the membrane to the extracellular matrix.

Linkage and association for bone mineral density and heel ultrasound measurements with a simple tandem repeat polymorphism near the osteocalcin gene in female dizygotic twins.

In this confirmatory candidate gene study, we investigated possible linkage and association for bone density, heel ultrasound and bone turnover with the osteocalcin gene using the nearby (50-180kb) microsatellite marker D1S3737. Non-identical twin sisters aged 18-75 years at first interview were recruited for the study from the St Thomas' UK Adult Twin Registry with 1366 women being genotyped for marker D1S3737. Linkage, allelic association and joint linkage and association tests were carried out using quantitative transmission disequilibrium tests (QTDT), along with post-hoc multivariate tests of linkage and association.

The influence of a distractor during compound preexposure on latent inhibition.

Nonreinforced exposure to a nontarget stimulus that was followed by nonreinforced exposure to a target/nontarget simultaneous compound stimulus resulted in enhanced latent inhibition of the target. Conditioning was slower after this treatment than after nonreinforced exposure to the target stimulus alone (Experiment 1). However, a salient auditory stimulus presented immediately after the compound in the second phase reduced levels of latent inhibition, relative to the enhanced latent inhibition produced when no such extracompound stimulus was presented (Experiments 2 and 3).
