Hemophilia A (HA) patients under emicizumab prophylaxis may require the concomitant use of procoagulant factors for breakthrough bleedings or immune tolerance induction (ITI). The aim of this study is to evaluate the ex vivo procoagulant effect of plasma-derived FVIII concentrates containing von Willebrand factor (pdFVIII/VWF) in samples from patients with severe HA without inhibitors on emicizumab prophylaxis. Samples from healthy controls (HC) and HA patients were drawn in sodium citrate plus corn trypsin inhibitor tubes and spiked with increasing concentrations of pdFVIII/VWF concentrates (10-400 IU/dL) (Fanhdi/Alphanate, Grifols), activated prothrombin complex concentrate (aPCC, 0.

Article Synopsis
  • Defecation disorders can stem from either structural (SDD) or functional (FDD) anorectal issues, and this study aims to investigate their prevalence among patients with obstructive defecation.
  • A retrospective analysis of 588 patients revealed that the majority (90.3%) were women, with the majority suffering from SDD, including conditions like rectocele and prolapse, alongside various functional impairments.
  • The study found that incomplete rectal emptying was more common in those with FDD compared to SDD, and due to the frequent coexistence of both disorders, a combined therapeutic approach starting with FDD treatments is recommended.

Introduction: Presence of von Willebrand factor (VWF) in FVIII concentrates offers protection against neutralizing inhibitors in haemophilia A (HA). Whether this protection is more evident in plasma-derived (pd) FVIII/VWF or recombinant (r) FVIII concentrates remains controversial.

Aim: We investigated the protection exerted by VWF against FVIII inhibitors in an in vivo mouse model of HA exposed to pdFVIII/VWF or to various rFVIII concentrates.

Background: Emicizumab is an alternative non-factor approach for treating patients with hemophilia A. However, there is a potential risk of thrombotic events when emicizumab is concomitantly administered with pro-hemostatic therapies.

Objectives: To assess the hemostatic effect in vitro when a plasma-derived factor VIII concentrate containing von Willebrand factor (pdFVIII/VWF) was added to hemophilia A plasma (HAp) in combination with emicizumab.

Article Synopsis
  • Amorphous silicon carbide (a-SiC:H) is effective for photoelectrochemical water splitting due to its small band-gap and stability.
  • By adding an n-doped silicon oxide layer to the photocathode, the device's voltage and photocurrent improved significantly to over 0.8 V, thanks to enhanced electric fields and reduced charge-recombination losses.
  • Further increases in photocurrent were achieved by optimizing the thickness of the absorber layer to 150 nm, resulting in a saturation current of 10 mA/cm² in a specific potassium hydrogen phthalate electrolyte.

Automatic summarization generation of sports video content has been object of great interest for many years. Although semantic descriptions techniques have been proposed, many of the approaches still rely on low-level video descriptors that render quite limited results due to the complexity of the problem and to the low capability of the descriptors to represent semantic content. In this paper, a new approach for automatic highlights summarization generation of soccer videos using audio-visual descriptors is presented.

Introduction: As mortality and morbidity after a curative resection remains high, it is essential to identify pre-operative factors associated with an early death after a major resection.

Methods: Between 1998 and 2008, we selected a population of 331 patients having undergone a major hepatectomy including segment I with a lymphadenectomy and a common bile duct resection for a proven hilar cholangiocarcinoma in 21 tertiary centres. The study's objective was to identify pre-operative predictors of early death (<12 months) after a resection.

Identifying serum pre-treatment molecular markers that can predict response to therapy is of great interest in head and neck oncology and is required to develop personalized treatments that maximize survival while minimizing morbidity. The main aim was to investigate the potential prognostic significance of tumor necrosis factor-like weak inducer of apoptosis (TWEAK), and its receptors, fibroblast growth factor-inducible 14 (Fn14) and CD163, in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). The study comprised 37 consecutive patients with pathologically confirmed, untreated HNSCC.

The lack of vectors for selective gene delivery to the intestine has hampered the development of gene therapy strategies for intestinal diseases. We hypothesized that chimeric adenoviruses of Ad5 (species C) displaying proteins of the naturally enteric Ad40 (species F) might hold the intestinal tropism of the species F and thus be useful for gene delivery to the intestine. As oral-fecal dissemination of enteric adenovirus must withstand the conditions encountered in the gastrointestinal tract, we studied the resistance of chimeric Ad5 carrying the short-fiber protein of Ad40 to acid milieu and proteases and found that the Ad40 short fiber confers resistance to inactivation in acidic conditions and that AdF/40S was further activated upon exposure to low pH.
