Athymic mice (C3H/HeN) parasitized by Brugia malayi develop massively dilated lymphatics. The lymphatic endothelial lining is perturbed, and numerous mononuclear and giant cells are closely apposed to the endothelium. The hyperplastic endothelial cells and low opening pressure of the lymphatics suggest abnormal multiplication of these cells may be important in the dilation.

Background: Myxoid chondrosarcoma (MCS) is a rare, low-grade, indolent tumor that can occur in soft tissue and bone. It is, however, capable of distant metastases. Previous cytogenetic data include a translocation, t(9;22)(q22-31;q12), occurring in 6 of 14 cases of the extraskeletal variant of the disease.

To investigate whether Brugia malayi-induced lymphatic inflammation is due to production of pro-inflammatory cytokines, we determined the lymph and serum levels of interleukin (IL)-1, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor (TNF)-alpha and granulocyte-macrophage colony stimulating factor (GM-CSF) using enzyme immunoassays. Serum from normal and infected mice did not show elevated cytokine concentrations. Samples of lymph from parasitized lymphatics had significantly increased levels of IL-1 (range = 6-1620 pg/ml), IL-6 (19-17,800 pg/ml), TNF-alpha (19-2000 pg/ml) and GM-CSF (4-275 pg/ml).

Athymic mice (C3H/HeN) parasitized by Brugia malayi develop gross lymphatic dilations at the chronic stage of infection. The hyperplastic endothelial cells and low fluid pressure of the lymphatics, characteristic of these infections, suggest that abnormal changes in these cells may play an important role in the dilation. We studied the lymphatic and vascular endothelium of parasitized mice for morphological changes by scanning and/or transmission electron microscopy.

The most common type of gastric carcinoma, namely the intestinal type, has been proposed to result from a precancerous process in which chronic gastritis, atrophy, intestinal metaplasia and dysplasia develop in a sequential manner. Helicobacter pylori is considered as the main cause of chronic atrophic gastritis and thus may play a role in the gastric carcinogenesis process. The present study was aimed at investigating the prevalence of H.

The Brugia-jird model of lymphatic filariasis was used to examine the induction of cellular immune responses during the early premicrofilaremic phases of the infection. The intensity of the pulmonary granulomatous inflammatory response (PGRN) was determined by measuring granuloma areas around Sepharose beads coated with parasite extracts which were embolized in the lungs of jirds prior to necropsy. Necropsies were performed at 7, 14, 28, 56, and 150 days postinfection (DPI).

Multidrug resistance (MDR) to chemically unrelated therapeutic anticancer agents in mammalian cells is mediated by the overexpression of an ATP-dependent 150- to 180-kD membrane glycoprotein P-glycoprotein (P-gp). Although the complete physiological role of P-gp is unknown, it is proposed to function in cellular detoxification of xenobiotics. In this study, we investigated whether the organophosphorus insecticide chlorpyrifos (O,O-diethyl O-3,5,6-trichloro-2-pyridinyl phosphorothioate) or its metabolites interact with P-gp.

This study investigates cortisol and ACTH (corticotropin) responses to an infusion of human CRH (corticotropin-releasing hormone) in prepubertal children with major depressive disorder (MDD). Following a period of 24 hours of adaptation to the laboratory environment with an intravenous catheter in place, 34 children with MDD and 22 healthy controls received 1 microgram/kg of human CRH at 5:00 PM. Blood samples for cortisol and ACTH were measured at baseline and post-CRH.

Recently, we have characterized and purified a novel transglutaminase (pTGase) from adults of the filarial worms Brugia malayi. pTGase-catalyzed reactions seem to play an essential role during in utero growth and development of microfilariae. The results presented here demonstrate that exudates from the peritoneal cavity of jirds, the site where adult worms of B.

One-hundred and fourteen limb transplantations have been performed across a major histoincompatibility barrier between donor ACI (RT1a) and recipient Lewis (RT1l) rats immunosuppressed with various dosages of FK-506 and cyclosporine. Three-hundred and thirty biopsy specimens from 64 animals have been evaluated histologically for signs of rejection. A new histologic grading system is introduced to classify the process of rejection in the component tissues (skin, muscle, bone, and articular cartilage) of a limb allograft.

Objective: To examine whether depression aggregates in the families of depressed adolescents and to determine whether clinical features and/or comorbid syndromes in the depressed adolescents change the risk of psychopathology in relatives.

Method: Lifetime prevalence rates of psychopathology in the first-degree (n = 228) and second-degree (n = 736) relatives of 76 adolescents with major depressive disorder (MDD) and the first-degree (n = 107) and second-degree (n = 323) relatives of 34 normal control adolescents were assessed by the Family History-Research Diagnostic Criteria (FH-RDC) method using the parent/guardian as the family informant.

Results: Compared with the first-degree relatives of normal controls, the relatives of depressed adolescents had significantly higher lifetime rates of MDD (25% versus 13%) and "any" of the FH-RDC psychiatric disorders (53% versus 36%).

Two-centimeter nerve allografts were transplanted across a major histocompatibility barrier from donor ACI rats into a 0.5-cm gap in the sciatic nerve of recipient Lewis rats and immunosuppressed with FK506, 2 mg/kg per day for 3 months. One group of animals continued to receive intermittent immunosuppression with FK506, 2 mg/kg twice a week for another 2 months, whereas the second group of animals received no further immunosuppression in order to determine whether rejection of nerve allografts can still occur after immunosuppression is withdrawn, even after the axons have regenerated through the nerve graft.

Most jirds (Meriones unguiculatus) with chronic Brugia pahangi infections remain microfilaremic, develop a hyporesponsive state, and are susceptible to reinfection. Although few, some jirds become amicrofilaremic or fail to develop a microfilaremia. The hypothesis that chronically infected, amicrofilaremic jirds may be resistant to reinfection was tested.

We have developed a polymerase chain reaction (PCR)-based assay that could effectively reduce the time period required to screen and select for Gall Midgeresistant rice lines under field conditions. The primers for the assay were designed on the basis of sequence information of two phenotype specific random amplified polymorphic DNA fragments which were found to be tightly linked to Gall Midge biotype-1 resistance gene (Gm2). The two RAPD fragments, F81700 in the susceptible parent 'ARC6650' and F10600 in the resistant parent 'Phalguna', were identified after screening 5450 loci using 520 random primers on genomic DNAs of 'ARC6650' and 'Phalguna'.
