Palisade cell geometry in relation to leaf optical and photosynthetic properties in Viburnum.

The optical properties of lobed palisade mesophyll cells remain poorly understood despite their presence in diverse taxa and the critical role of the palisade layer in leaf-light interactions and carbon assimilation. Using micro-computed tomography, 3D ray tracing simulations, and physiological experiments, we tested the interactions between palisade cell geometry, chloroplast localization, light directional quality, and leaf optical and photosynthetic performance in the model taxon Viburnum. Simulations showed that lobed cells shifted between absorptance- or transmittance-dominated states depending on chloroplast localization, irrespective of light directional quality.

Characterizing the Effect of Filament Moisture on Tensile Properties and Morphology of Fused Deposition Modeled Polylactic Acid/Polybutylene Succinate Parts.

Moisture absorption into hygroscopic/hydrophilic materials used in fused deposition modeling (FDM) can diminish desired mechanical properties. Sensitivity to moisture is dependent on material properties and environmental factors and needs characterization. In this article, moisture sensitivity of four grades of polylactic acid (PLA) filaments and four different ratios of PLA/polybutylene succinate (PBS) blended filaments were characterized through FDM printed American society for testing and materials (ASTM-D638) test samples after conditioning the filaments at different relative humidity levels.

Ventriculocoronary connection with mitral stenosis/aortic stenosis hypoplastic left heart: a case report.

Ventriculocoronary connections develop most commonly in children with mitral stenosis/aortic atresia hypoplastic left heart. These connections can lead to myocardial ischaemia and dysfunction. We report a newborn with mitral stenosis/aortic stenosis hypoplastic left heart who endured systemic ventricular injury post-Norwood, secondary to a large ventriculocoronary fistula.

Proteomics based selection achieves complete response to HER2 therapy in HER2 IHC 0 breast cancer.

Recent trials have shown the efficacy of trastuzumab deruxtecan (T-DXd) in HER2-negative patients, but there is not yet a way to identify which patients will best respond, especially with the inability of current HER2 IHC and FISH assays to accurately determine HER2 expression in the unamplified setting. Here, we present a heavily pre-treated patient with triple-negative breast cancer (HER2 IHC 0 who had a complete response to T-DXd. In this case, we used a CLIA-certified reverse-phase protein array-based proteomic assay (RPPA) to determine that the patient had moderate HER2 protein expression (HER2 2+, 42%) and activation (HER2 1+, 23%).

Microcins are small antibacterial proteins that mediate interbacterial competition. Their narrow-spectrum activity provides opportunities to discover microbiome-sparing treatments. However, microcins have been found almost exclusively in Enterobacteriaceae.

Expert assessment of illegal collecting impacts on Venus flytraps and priorities for research on illegal trade.

Illegal collecting of wild Venus flytraps (Dionaea muscipula) for the horticultural trade represents a persistent threat to populations of the species across their endemic range in the coastal plain of North and South Carolina (United States). Although wild collecting of Venus flytraps is not a novel threat, there has been very little research on the impacts of collecting on the species' conservation to date or why an illegal trade persists alongside a legal one. We drew on qualitative expert stakeholder elicitation to contextualize the threat of illegal collecting to the long-term conservation of Venus flytraps in relation to other anthropogenic threats.

Phenotypic diversity and population structure of Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) collections reveals geographic patterns.

Pecan (Carya illinoinensis) is an economically important nut crop known for its genetic diversity and adaptability to various climates. Understanding the growth variability, phenological traits, and population structure of pecan populations is crucial for breeding programs and conservation. In this study, plant growth and phenological traits were evaluated over three consecutive seasons (2015-2017) for 550 genotypes from 26 provenances.

Non-Cardiac Perioperative Mortality Factors at a Single Urban Veterans Affairs Medical Center.

The Veterans affairs (VA) surgical quality improvement program was established to evaluate the quality of VA surgical care to over nine million United States Veterans. Patient demographics vary by region, with urban areas correlating with higher mortality rates. This study attempts to determine the factors associated with 30-day mortality at a single VA medical center in an urban setting.

Deep mutational scanning and machine learning for the analysis of antimicrobial-peptide features driving membrane selectivity.

Many antimicrobial peptides directly disrupt bacterial membranes yet can also damage mammalian membranes. It is therefore central to their therapeutic use that rules governing the membrane selectivity of antimicrobial peptides be deciphered. However, this is difficult even for short peptides owing to the large combinatorial space of amino acid sequences.

Development of a Selective and Stable Antimicrobial Peptide.

Antimicrobial peptides (AMPs) are presented as potential scaffolds for antibiotic development due to their desirable qualities including broad-spectrum activity, rapid action, and general lack of susceptibility to current resistance mechanisms. However, they often lose antibacterial activity under physiological conditions and/or display mammalian cell toxicity, which limits their potential use. Identification of AMPs that overcome these barriers will help develop rules for how this antibacterial class can be developed to treat infection.

Electrophysiological phenotyping of left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy in pediatric populations: A systematic review.

Left ventricular noncompaction cardiomyopathy (LVNC) is a structural heart defect that has been associated with generation of arrhythmias in the population and is a cause of sudden cardiac death with severe systolic dysfunction and fatal arrhythmias. LVNC has gained increasing acknowledgment with increased prevalence. We conducted a systematic review of reported electrocardiogram (ECG) results for pediatric LVNC patients.

Atom-resolved imaging with a silicon tip integrated into an on-chip scanning tunneling microscope.

Limited throughput is a shortcoming of the Scanning Tunneling Microscope (STM), particularly when used for atomically precise lithography. To address this issue, we have developed an on-chip STM based on Microelectromechanical-Systems (MEMS) technology. The device reported here has one degree of freedom, replacing the Z axis in a conventional STM.

Quantitative proteomic analysis of HER2 protein expression in PDAC tumors.

Metastatic pancreatic adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is the third leading cause of cancer-related death in the United States, with a 5-year survival rate of only 11%, necessitating identification of novel treatment paradigms. Tumor tissue specimens from patients with PDAC, breast cancer, and other solid tumor malignancies were collected and tumor cells were enriched using laser microdissection (LMD). Reverse phase protein array (RPPA) analysis was performed on enriched tumor cell lysates to quantify a 32-protein/phosphoprotein biomarker panel comprising known anticancer drug targets and/or cancer-related total and phosphorylated proteins, including HER2, HER2, and HER3.

Mapping a 50-spin-qubit network through correlated sensing.

Spins associated to optically accessible solid-state defects have emerged as a versatile platform for exploring quantum simulation, quantum sensing and quantum communication. Pioneering experiments have shown the sensing, imaging, and control of multiple nuclear spins surrounding a single electron spin defect. However, the accessible size of these spin networks has been constrained by the spectral resolution of current methods.

A Systematic Review of the Effectiveness of Cervical Cancer Screening and Prevention Interventions for African American Women: Implications for Promoting Health Equity.

African American women suffer under the burden of cervical cancer as they are first in mortality, diagnosed at later stages, and have a survivorship rate that is lower than the national average. The aim of our review is to evaluate the effectiveness of cervical cancer screening and prevention interventions for African American women living in the United States and to assess their commitment to health equity. A literature search was conducted using PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, and Scopus using MeSH terms related to cervical cancer, human papillomavirus (HPV), screening and prevention, and African Americans.

Study protocol for clinical trial of the FIT Families multicomponent obesity intervention for African American adolescents and their caregivers: Next step from the ORBIT initiative.

Introduction: This study will test the effectiveness of FIT Families (FIT), a multicomponent family-based behavioural intervention, against a credible attention control condition, Home-Based Family Support (HBFS). This protocol paper describes the design of a randomised clinical trial testing the efficacy of the FIT intervention. The protocol will assess the efficacy of FIT to improve health status in African American adolescents with obesity (AAAO) and their primary caregivers on primary (percent body fat) and secondary (physical activity, metabolic control, weight loss) outcomes and its cost-effectiveness.
