In order to study the biological activity of the two novel steroidal carbamates derivatives: 8a and 8b, we determined the concentration of both compounds that inhibit the 50% of the activity of human prostate 5alpha-reductase enzyme, as well as the in vivo effect of these compounds in the weight of hamster prostate and flank organs diameter size. We determined also, the capacity of these steroids to bind to the androgen receptors present in the rat prostate cytosol. Furthermore the activity of these compounds on the mRNA expression of glycerol 3-phosphate acyl transferase (GPAT) in flank organs was analyzed by RT-PCR.

A possible relationship between Takayasu arteritis (TA) and Tuberculosis (Tb) has been suggested. Both diseases present similar chronic inflammatory lesions and occasionally granulomas on the arterial walls. The genetic relationship between these two diseases has not been explored before, however, both diseases have been associated with human leukocyte antigen (HLA) alleles.

Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is the etiologic agent of HTLV-I-associated myelopathy/tropical spastic paraparesis (HAM/TSP). High HTLV-I provirus load and tax mRNA level have been suggested as predictors of disease progression in patients with HAM/TSP, but little is known about the temporal variation in patients. To clarify the role of high proviral and tax mRNA loads and their fluctuations in the pathogenesis of HAM/TSP, we measured proviral load and tax mRNA in serially collected peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) from nine patients with HAM/TSP during a long-term follow-up, by use of real-time polymerase chain reaction using tax primers.

Objectives: Medical practice assessments for a specific patient population can be useful for improving health care quality and decreasing the variations in clinical practice. Our aim was to assess compliance with clinical practice guidelines established for patients with meningitis using previously formulated indicators.

Methods: The indicators of quality were based on clinical practice guidelines and selected through consensus meetings.

The objective of this study was to compare the prevalence of overweight and obesity in children from northwest of Mexico based on BMI/age and three criteria of growth reference standards. Six hundred and four children, 6 to 10 years of age, from 17 municipalities of the state of Sonora were measured for weight and height and age established from birth certificate school records. The prevalence of overweight and obesity was determined by the new version of the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC/NCHS), the International Obesity Task Force (IOTF) and the values proposed by The World Health Organization (WHO) that was utilized in the National Nutrition Survey of 1999 in Mexico (ENN).

Background: Allergy to airborne fungi can cause rhinitis and severe asthma, hence the exposure to spores inside home is an important factor of sensitization. The aim of this study was to determine the distribution and prevalence of species of Alternaria, Aspergillus, Cladosporium and Penicillium inside and outside of homes of patients allergic to fungi and to evaluate seasonal variations.

Methods: Air samples were collected in 22 selected homes of patients with allergy to fungi using a volumetric method of impacting plates with culture media.

In this study we report the synthesis and pharmacological evaluation, in vivo as well as in vitro, of four new progesterone derivatives 4-7. The evaluation in vivo was carried out on gonadectomized male hamsters that were injected subcutaneously daily with 1 mg/Kg of testosterone (T) and/or 1 mg/Kg of finasteride, or with 2 mg/Kg of the novel compounds. It was observed that when testosterone (T) and finasteride or compound 4 were injected together, the weight of the prostate decreased significantly as compared to that oftestosterone-treated animals.

The objective of this study was to assess the nutritional quality of Mexican men's diet and its relation to socio-economic status (SES) and BMI. A random sample of 325 Mexican men, aged 35-65 y and stratified by SES and urban or rural residence, took part in the study. Two nonconsecutive 24-h dietary recalls were conducted in person.

Twenty four Hereford heifers free of anaplasmosis were allotted into three groups of eight animals each and inoculated three times with adjuvant in Puck saline as control or 50 microg and 100 microg of total protein of Anaplasma marginale initial bodies from three Mexican strains which share the same variable region of msp1alpha and msp4. Inoculation with the adjuvant or the immunogen at either of the two protein doses did not induce any undesirable changes attributable to inoculation in vaccinates or controls. On day 78 post vaccination animals were released in a ranch where bovine Anaplasmosis is endemic.

Objective: Assessment of HIV prevalence and associated risk behaviours among female commercial sex workers (FCSW) across major cities in South America.

Methods: Seroepidemiological, cross sectional studies of 13 600 FCSW were conducted in nine countries of South America during the years 1999-2002. Participants were recruited in brothels, massage parlours, hotels, and streets where anonymous questionnaires and blood samples were collected.

The efficacy and safety of two whole IgG polyvalent antivenoms (A and B) were compared in a randomised, blinded clinical trial in 67 patients systemically envenomed by Bothrops asper in Colombia. Both antivenoms were fractionated by caprylic acid precipitation and had similar neutralising potencies, protein concentrations and aggregate contents. Antivenom B was additionally treated with beta-propiolactone to lower its anticomplementary activity.

Objectives: We compared the prevalence of measles immunization determined by serology with the prevalence of measles immunization determined by immunization records, and identified factors predictive of measles immunization among a sample of children from two Chicago communities.

Methods: We collected demographic information and blood specimens from a sample of children aged 12-71 months in two Chicago communities at risk for low measles immunization coverage levels. We collected immunization information from provider records, parent-held records, and the statewide immunization registry.

Objectives: To evaluate whether immunization data collected on a child's entry into kindergarten, i.e., Chicago Public School Immunization Data (PSID), was comparable to coverage levels determined by the National Immunization Survey (NIS) and to use these data to identify community areas with consistently low immunization coverage.

Surfactant protein C (SP-C) is a membrane-associated protein essential for normal respiration. It has been found that the alpha-helix form of SP-C can undergo, under certain conditions, a transformation from an alpha-helix to a beta-strand conformation that closely resembles amyloid fibrils, which are possible contributors to the pathogenesis of pulmonary alveolar proteinosis. Molecular dynamics simulations using the NAMD2 package were performed for systems containing from one to seven SP-C molecules to study their behavior in water.

Background: Human T-cell lymphotropic virus type I (HTLV-I) is a retrovirus that influences cellular metabolism modifying biological responses. This results in oncogenic, degenerative or inflammatory changes. The myelopathy associated to HTLV-I or tropical spastic paraparesia (HAM/TSP) is a mainly degenerative response to the virus infection.

The in vivo and in vitro antiandrogenic activity of four aromatic esters 10a-10d, one aliphatic ester 10e based on the pregna-4,16-diene-6, 20-dione structure and two aromatic 17c, 17d and two aliphatic valeroyloxy esters 17a, 17b based on the more saturated 4-pregnene-6,20-dione skeleton was examined. The biological activity of steroids 9, 10a-10e and 17a-17d, was determined using prostate glands from gonadectomized adult male golden hamsters. In the in vitro studies, the relative binding affinity of these steroids to cytoplasmic androgen receptor (AR) of hamster prostate was determined from, the corresponding IC50 values obtained from the competitive binding plots.

The vast majority of hip fractures in the 21st century will occur in the developing countries. The rates and life-time hip fracture risk are not known for Mexico, and for this reason, we studied the incidence of hip fractures, and the remaining life-time probability of having a hip fracture at the age of 50 years in Mexican men and women. All hip fracture cases registered during the year 2000 were collected at all the main tertiary-care hospitals in the two major health systems in México City, Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social (IMSS) and Ministry of Health (SS), and the diagnosis was validated by chart review in all cases.
