This paper describes a framework for collecting, annotating, and archiving high-throughput assays from multiple experiments conducted on one or more series of samples. Specific applications include support for large-scale surveys of related transcriptional profiling studies, for investigations of the genetics of gene expression and for joint analysis of copy number variation and mRNA abundance. Our approach consists of data capture and modeling processes rooted in R/Bioconductor, sample annotation and sequence constituent ontology management based in R, secure data archiving in PostgreSQL, and browser-based workspace creation and management rooted in Zope.

The purpose of this study was to determine if the noninvasive and nondestructive technique of magnetic resonance imaging could be used to quantify the amount of repair tissue that fills surgically-induced chondral defects in the rabbit. Sixteen 4-mm diameter full-thickness chondral defects were created. A photopolymerizable hydrogel was used to seal the defects as a treatment modality.

Scanning and transmission electron microscopy were used to study the morphology and formation of the eggshell in the tarnished plant bug, Lygus lineolaris. Eggs are bean-shaped, with an operculum at the anterior end surrounded by a row of 36-40 respiratory horns. Three micropylar openings are on the operculum, and are sealed in oviposited eggs.

Insect oocytes sequester nutritive proteins from the hemolymph under the regulation by juvenile hormone (JH), in a process called patency. Here, a pharmacological approach was used to decipher the role for calcium in ovarial patency in the moth, Heliothis virescens. Follicular epithelial cells were exposed in calcium-free or calcium-containing media to JH I, JH II or JH III alone, or in combination with various inhibitors of signal transduction.

Introduction: Because there is little information available as to how fatigue and color vision interact, we present some incidental findings on how a protanope and a color-normal perform on several color vision tests after 1 night of sleep deprivation.

Case Report: A series of clinically and occupationally based color vision tests were administered to a protanope and a color-normal subject after they had stayed awake all night and after a regular night's sleep. There was essentially no change in their performance on the clinical color vision tests; however, both did worse on the occupationally based color vision tests after 1 night of sleep deprivation.

In humans, circulating leptin levels are low in early childhood and rise until puberty, whereas the reverse occurs for the soluble leptin receptor (sOB-R). In women, leptin remains high and sOB-R remains low, but in men leptin declines after adolescence and sOB-R increases. These observations suggest that leptin may regulate the production of sOB-R, and that the increased testosterone in adolescent boys may be responsible for the gender differences in leptin and sOB-R.

Coherently moving flocks of birds, beasts, or bacteria are examples of living matter with spontaneous orientational order. How do these systems differ from thermal equilibrium systems with such liquid crystalline order? Working with a fluidized monolayer of macroscopic rods in the nematic liquid crystalline phase, we find giant number fluctuations consistent with a standard deviation growing linearly with the mean, in contrast to any situation where the central limit theorem applies. These fluctuations are long-lived, decaying only as a logarithmic function of time.

Trade in food and animal products has increased several-fold in the past decade, and simultaneously regulations governing the movement of such products across national boundaries have also increased. The present study reviews harmonization in food trade regulation by focusing on nutritional aspects to understand its role in enhancing world trade on the one hand and consumer interest and welfare on the other. Harmonization to a large extent brings in more regulation from the developed world acting through their governments, consumer organizations, and multinational companies; it does not seem to address, in general, the concerns of the large segments of the poor population for whom agriculture and food trade are the main sources of livelihood.

In the male monkey, luteinising hormone (LH) secretion is regulated by a negative feedback action of testicular testosterone that is exerted indirectly at the hypothalamic level to decelerate pulsatile gonadotrophin-releasing hormone release (GnRH). The purpose of the present experiment was to investigate whether the kisspeptin-G protein-coupled receptor 54 (GPR54) signalling pathway is involved in mediating the action of testosterone to suppress GnRH release in the monkey, as has been indicated by studies of nonprimates. To this end, 12 castrated adult male rhesus monkeys were implanted with either testosterone containing or empty Silastic capsules.

The saturation curve of a sample of paper board was measured with mercury-intrusion porosimetry, and the three-dimensional structure of its pore space was determined by x-ray tomographic imaging. Ab initio numerical simulation of intrusion on the tomographic reconstruction, based on the lattice-Boltzmann method, was in excellent agreement with the measured saturation curve. A numerical invasion-percolation simulation in the same tomographic reconstruction showed good agreement with the lattice-Boltzmann simulation.

In agonadal juvenile male monkeys, continuous administration of human metastin 45-54 (hu metastin 45-54) leads to desensitization of its receptor, G protein-coupled receptor 54 (GPR54), and decreased LH. The present study extended this observation to the adult male monkey, a more preclinically relevant model in which robust activity in the hypothalamic-pituitary-testicular axis is present. Continuous iv infusion of hu metastin 45-54 at either 200 or 400 microg/h elicited a marked rise in circulating LH that peaked 2-3 h after initiation of treatment.

Huntington's disease (HD) is a devastating neurodegenerative disease characterized by the selective loss of neurons in the striatum and cerebral cortex. This study tested the hypothesis that an adenoassociated viral (AAV2) vector encoding for the trophic factor neurturin (NTN) could provide neuroprotection in the rat 3-nitropropionic acid (3NP) model of HD. Rats received AAV2-NTN (CERE-120), AAV2-eGFP or Vehicle, followed 4 weeks later by the mitochondrial toxin 3NP.
