Background: Tuberculosis vaccine trials using disease as the primary endpoint are large, time consuming, and expensive. An earlier immunological measure of the protection against disease would accelerate tuberculosis vaccine development. We aimed to assess whether the effectiveness of the Bacillus Calmette-Guérin (BCG) vaccine for prevention of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection was consistent with that for prevention of tuberculosis disease.

Article Synopsis
  • Cerebral palsy (CP) is linked to upper motoneuron disorders that disrupt muscle function due to issues in the developing brain, causing muscle stiffness and changes in extracellular matrix (ECM) architecture.
  • A study collected muscle biopsies from children with CP and typically developing (TD) individuals to analyze how muscle and ECM changes affect stiffness, gait, and joint function.
  • Results showed that while muscle mechanics were similar between TD and CP, stiffness and collagen properties in CP hamstrings correlated with reduced knee motion, indicating that ECM properties may change significantly during muscle stretching in CP.

The relationship between intimate partner violence (IPV), depression, and risky alcohol use is complex and multi-dimensional. Depression has been documented as a common consequence of experiencing IPV, where depressed individuals might turn to substances like alcohol as a coping mechanism. Thus, assessing the indirect effect of depression in the relationship between IPV and alcohol abuse in African American and Hispanic women is warranted.

Urban green installations are extensively promoted to increase sustainable and accessible food production and simultaneously improve the environmental performance and liveability of city buildings. In addition to the multiple benefits of plant retrofitting, these installations may lead to a consistent increase in biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) in the urban environment, especially indoors. Accordingly, health concerns could limit the implementation of building-integrated agriculture.

Hydrazones are common carbene precursors in many palladium-catalyzed cross coupling reactions of carbenes as a coupling partner, but their interaction with palladium has been overlooked. We have found that hydrazonato ligands readily coordinate to Pd aryl complexes leading to [PdAr(L-L){(TolSO)N-NCHR}] (Ar = Ph, CF; L-L = dppe, dppf; R = CHCHPh, Ph). Ligand substitution reactions on [PdAr(dppe)X] (X = Br, TolSO) show that the hydrazonato ligand coordinates preferentially so the hydrazonato complexes are likely resting states in catalytic carbene coupling reactions using hydrazones as reactants.
