Article Synopsis
  • - Neuraminidase (NA) is a key glycoprotein in the influenza virus that aids in replication, yet existing vaccines mainly target hemagglutinin (HA) instead of NA despite evidence linking NA antibodies to disease resistance.
  • - Research showed that recombinant NA (rNA) is effective in eliciting immune responses in naïve mice and ferrets, even among those with existing immunity.
  • - When rNA was added to a traditional HA-based vaccine, it significantly enhanced NA-specific immune responses in ferrets without compromising HA-specific immunity, suggesting a potential improvement in vaccine effectiveness.

Article Synopsis
  • Hypercoagulability is linked to higher levels of coagulation factors and increased thrombin generation, which could be related to type 2 diabetes and other complications like glucose metabolism issues and endothelial dysfunction.
  • The study analyzed data from 5,718 participants, tracking diabetes diagnoses over 6.7 years, and found that higher levels of specific coagulation factors correlated with increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
  • Although glycoprotein acetylation (GlycA) was examined as a potential mediator in these associations, it only explained a small portion of the relationship, suggesting that hypercoagulability plays a significant role in the development of type 2 diabetes.

Self-assembly of M(ClO) (M = Ni, Cu, and Zn) with (1,1',1'',2,2',2'')-(benzenetricarbonyltris(azanediyl))tris(2,3-dihydro-1-indene-2,1-diyl) trinicotinate (,-L) and the corresponding enantiomer (,-L) as a pair of chiral tridentate donors gives rise to the chiral cage pairs [M(,- and ,-L)](ClO). For the two pairs of [(MeCO)(HO)@M(,- and ,-L)](ClO) (M = Ni and Zn), the inner cavity is occupied by both an acetone and a single water molecule, whereas for the copper(II) pair of [MeCO@Cu(,- and ,-L)](ClO) under the same conditions, the cavity is filled by only one acetone molecule. Thus, the encapsulation of guest molecules into the cages during self-assembly shows significant metal(II) ion effects.

Introduction: Numerical simulations have demonstrated the superior bending flexibility of auxetic stents compared to conventional stent designs for endovascular procedures. However, conventional stent manufacturing techniques struggle to produce complex auxetic stent designs, fueling the adoption of additive manufacturing techniques.

Methods: In this study, we employed DMLS additive manufacturing to create Titanium Ti64 alloy stent prototypes based on auxetic stent designs investigated in a previous study.

The self-assembly of NiCl with a chiral bidentate ligand pair, (1,2)-(+)- and (1,2)-(-)-1-(nicotinamido)-2,3-dihydro-1-inden-2-yl nicotinate (,-L and ,-L) in a mixture of ethanol and dioxane, gives rise to stable crystals consisting of [2Cl@NiCl(,-L)(HO)]·4CHO·EtOH and [2Cl@NiCl(,-L)(HO)]·4CHO·EtOH chiral cages, respectively, with two encapsulated chloride anions in the cavities. The most interesting feature is that the self-assembly of NiCl with the mixture of ,-L and ,-L (1 : 1-1 : 4) produces crystals of thermodynamically stable achiral cages, [2Cl·2HO@NiCl(,-L)(,-L)(HO)]·7CHO, in the molar ratio range. Furthermore, the [2Cl@NiCl(,-L)(HO)]·4CHO·EtOH and [2Cl@NiCl(,-L)(HO)]·4CHO·EtOH chiral crystals can recognize the pairs of L-,D-tryptophan and L-,D-cysteine cyclic voltammetry (CV) signals, in contrast to the [2Cl·2HO@NiCl(,-L)(,-L)(HO)]·7CHO achiral crystal.

Background: Chronic overconsumption of lipids followed by their excessive accumulation in the heart leads to cardiomyopathy. The cause of lipid-induced cardiomyopathy involves a pivotal role for the proton-pump vacuolar-type H-ATPase (v-ATPase), which acidifies endosomes, and for lipid-transporter CD36, which is stored in acidified endosomes. During lipid overexposure, an increased influx of lipids into cardiomyocytes is sensed by v-ATPase, which then disassembles, causing endosomal de-acidification and expulsion of stored CD36 from the endosomes toward the sarcolemma.

Background: Historical MCL (medial collateral ligament) reconstruction (MCLR) techniques have focused on the superficial MCL (sMCL) to restore valgus stability while frequently ignoring the importance of the deep MCL (dMCL) in controlling tibial external rotation. The recent recognition of the medial ligament complex importance has multiple studies revisiting medial anatomy and questioning contemporary MCLR techniques.

Purpose: To assess whether (1) an isolated sMCL reconstruction (sMCLR), (2) an isolated dMCL reconstruction (dMCLR), or (3) a novel single-strand short isometric construct (SIC) would restore translational and rotational stability to a knee with a dMCL and sMCL injury.

Hierarchical structural design has been verified as a feasible strategy to fabricate effective electromagnetic wave (EMW) absorbers, so we designed hierarchical core-sheath composites with magnetic particles and dielectric layers. In this work, a hierarchical structure of carbon fiber (CF)@FeO@MoS (CPDF7-M) was prepared by introducing FeO and depositing MoS layers on the surface of fibers. Due to the synergistic effects from the CF@FeO increasing the conductive and magnetic loss and the outer MoS layers improving the impedance matching, the optimal reflection loss () value was -63.

Purpose: Inappropriate stent-graft (SG) flexibility has been frequently associated with endovascular aortic repair (EVAR) complications such as endoleaks, kinks, and SG migration, especially in tortuous arteries. Stents derived from auxetic unit cells have shown some potential to address these issues as they offer an optimum trade-off between radial stiffness and bending flexibility.

Methods: In this study, we utilized an established finite element (FE)-based approach to replicate the mechanical response of a SG iliac limb derived from auxetic unit cells in a virtual tortuous iliac aneurysm using a combination of a 180° U-bend and intraluminal pressurization.

Self-assembly of CuX (X = BF, PF, and SbF) with a pair of chiral bidentate ligands, (12)-(+)- and (12)-(-)-1-(nicotinamido)-2,3-dihydro-1-inden-2-yl-nicotinate (-L or -L), in a mixture solvent including ethanol in a glass vessel gives rise to SiF-encapsulated CuL chiral cage products. The SiF anion from the reaction of X with SiO of the glass-vessel surface acts as a cage template or cage bridge. One of the products, [SiF@Cu(SiF)(-L)]·3CHCl·4EtOH, is one of the most effective heterogeneous catalysts for the oxidation of 3,5-di--butylcatechol.
