Dynamic spectra (DS) can greatly reduce the influence of individual differences and the measurement environment by extracting the absorbance of pulsating blood at multiple wavelengths, and it is expected to achieve noninvasive detection of blood components. The selective intrauterine growth restriction (sIUGR) of monochorionic diamniotic (MCDC) twins causes phenotypic growth discordance, which is correlated with metabolomic pertubations. A global, untargeted identification of the metabolic fingerprint may help elucidate the etiology of sIUGR. We recently developed two quantitative fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) measurement methods based on spectral unmixing of emission spectra (IIem-spFRET) and excitation-emission spectra (ExEm-spFRET), respectively. We here evaluated robustness of the two methods by implementing them on a self-assembled quantitative FRET measurement system using the cells expressing different constructs. For the cells with larger signal-to-noise (S/N) ratio (>9), the two methods obtained consistent FRET efficiency (E) values and total concentration ratio (R) values of acceptor to donor for all constructs; for the cells with 3 < S/N < 9, IIem-spFRET obtained bigger R values than the expected value for VCV construct; for the cells with S/N < 3, although IIem-spFRET method obtained inaccurate E and R values for VCV construct, the two methods also obtained consistent E and R values for all other constructs.

We investigate the metal-insulator-semiconductor contacts on n-Ge utilizing a ZnO interfacial layer (IL) to overcome the Fermi-level pinning (FLP) effect at metal/Ge interface and reduce the barrier height for electrons. A small conduction band offset of 0.22 eV at the interface between ZnO and n-Ge is obtained, and the ZnO IL leads to the significant reduced contact resistance (R) in metal/ZnO/n-Ge compared to the control device without ZnO, due to the elimination of FLP.

The current standard of care for acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is largely ineffective with very high relapse rates and low survival rates, mostly due to the inability to eliminate a rare population of leukemic stem cells (LSCs) that initiate tumor growth and are resistant to standard chemotherapy. RNA-sequencing analysis on isolated LSCs confirmed C-type lectin domain family 12 member A (CLL1, also known as CLEC12A) to be highly expressed on LSCs but not on normal hematopoietic stem cells (HSCs) or other healthy organ tissues. Although the importance of parasitoids as biocontrol agents has long been recognized, systematic studies of the physiological mechanisms are scarce, especially in those parasitoids that are able to successfully invade their hosts by activating host immune responses. This study explored this phenomenon by investigating the effects of ovarian fluid, venom and egg surface characteristics of Tetrastichus brontispae (Hymenoptera: Eulophidae) on host immunity. The results showed that the injection of venom alone induced higher phenoloxidase activity, while a mixture of ovarian plus venom fluids provoked higher granulocyte and plasmatocyte spreading ratios, highlighting the role that egg surface characteristics may play in successful parasitism.

A novel virus, tilapia lake virus (TiLV), has been identified as a key pathogen responsible for disease outbreak and mass mortality of farmed tilapia. Philadelphia chromosome-like acute lymphoblastic leukemia (Ph-like ALL; --like ALL) in children with National Cancer Institute (NCI) intermediate- or high-risk (HR) ALL is associated with poor outcome. Pancreatic fibrosis is the hallmark of chronic pancreatitis, a highly debilitating disease for which there is currently no cure. The key event at the basis of pancreatic fibrosis is the deposition of extracellular matrix proteins by activated pancreatic stellate cells (PSCs). Transforming growth factor (TGF) is a potent profibrotic factor in the pancreas as it promotes the activation of PSC; thus, pharmacologic interventions that effectively reduce TGF expression harbor considerable therapeutic potential in the treatment of chronic pancreatitis.
