Purpose: To examine if changes in hemodynamic measures during an orthostatic challenge were associated with progression of age-related macular degeneration (AMD) over a 4-year period in The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing.

Methods: Participants with AMD who underwent an active stand (AS) test at wave 1 (2009/2010) and retinal photographs at both wave 1 and wave 3 (2014/2015) were included (N = 159: 121 with no AMD progression and 38 with progression). Beat-to-beat hemodynamic data were non-invasively collected using a Finometer MIDI device during the AS at wave 1, recording systolic blood pressure (sBP), diastolic blood pressure (dBP), mean arterial pressure (MAP), and heart rate.

Efforts to produce aromatic monomers through catalytic lignin depolymerization have historically focused on aryl-ether bond cleavage. A large fraction of aromatic monomers in lignin, however, are linked by various carbon-carbon (C-C) bonds that are more challenging to cleave and limit the yields of aromatic monomers from lignin depolymerization. Here, we report a catalytic autoxidation method to cleave C-C bonds in lignin-derived dimers and oligomers from pine and poplar.

Background: the aim of this study was to retrospectively operationalise the World Guidelines for Falls Prevention and Management (WGFPM) falls risk stratification algorithm using data from The Irish Longitudinal Study on Ageing (TILDA). We described how easy the algorithm was to operationalise in TILDA and determined its utility in predicting falls in this population.

Background: Asthma is the most common chronic disease in children, occurring at higher frequencies and with more severe disease in children with African ancestry.

Methods: We conducted a multiancestry whole-genome sequencing analysis of blood pressure among 51 456 Trans-Omics for Precision Medicine and Centers for Common Disease Genomics program participants (stage-1). Stage-2 analyses leveraged array data from UK Biobank (N=383 145), Million Veteran Program (N=318 891), and Reasons for Geographic and Racial Differences in Stroke (N=10 643) participants, along with whole-exome sequencing data from UK Biobank (N=199 631) participants.

The aim of this observational study was to clarify the longitudinal association between baseline symptomatic OH (sOH-30) and incident depression in a sample of >3000 older people without baseline depression (mean age: 62 years at baseline). More than half of all cases of preeclampsia occur in healthy first-time pregnant women. Our aim was to develop a method to predict those at risk by combining clinical factors and measurements of biomarkers in women recruited to the Screening for Pregnancy Endpoints (SCOPE) study of low-risk nulliparous women. Forty-seven biomarkers identified on the basis of (1) association with preeclampsia, (2) a biological role in placentation, or (3) a role in cellular mechanisms involved in the pathogenesis of preeclampsia were measured in plasma sampled at 14 to 16 weeks' gestation from 5623 women.

The prevalence and incidence of syncope increases with advancing years due to age related physiological changes in the neurocardiovascular, endocrine and renal systems. Cardiovascular syncope can present as falls because of amnesia for loss of consciousness or postural instability due to hypotension. Drop attacks or non accidental falls should thus be investigated for causes of syncope.
