This group of children is highly heterogeneous with respect to a range of factors such as age of onset, degree of hearing loss, language and communication choices and access, and educational settings. Capturing the complex background of a DHH child is a critical component of an appropriate and accurate evaluation.

Scleredema diabeticorum is a rare connective tissue complication of diabetes, most typically observed in adults with longstanding type 2 diabetes. Patients develop reticular dermis thickening with a peau d'orange appearance at the upper back and neck that occasionally extends over the deltoids and lower back. While considered a benign disorder, it may signify more significant diabetes and can be functionally and cosmetically impairing with insidious onset, few to no effective treatments, and low spontaneous remission potential.

The field of microbial ecology, evolution, and biodiversity (EEB) is at the leading edge of understanding how microbes shape our biosphere and influence the well-being of humankind and Earth. To that end, EEB is developing new transdisciplinary tools to analyze these ecologically critical, complex microbial communities. The American Society for Microbiology's Council on Microbial Sciences hosted a virtual retreat in 2023 to discuss the trajectory of EEB both within the Society and microbiology writ large.
