Background: The Gonococcal Antimicrobial Surveillance Programme is a passive surveillance system that has monitored antimicrobial resistance in in Canada since the 1980s. This article summarizes the demographics, antimicrobial resistances and NG-MAST ( multiantigen sequence typing) for cultures collected in 2020.

Methods: The National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) in Winnipeg received resistant cultures from provincial and territorial public health laboratories.

Background: Gonorrhea, when left untreated, can enter the blood and cause disseminated gonococcal infections (DGIs). Disseminated gonococcal infections, which can include dermatitis, tenosynovitis, migratory polyarthralgia, and arthritis, have been increasing in Manitoba (MB), Canada, since 2013. Endocarditis, a rare DGI, was identified in 3 MB patients in 2018 and 2019.

Article Synopsis
  • Asymptomatic nasopharyngeal carriage precedes invasive disease, making it important to study healthy populations for data on prevalent serotypes, especially with the use of pneumococcal vaccines.
  • A survey of healthy children in 2016 and 2018 analyzed nasopharyngeal swabs to assess carriage rates and serotypes using culture, Quellung reaction, and qPCR methods.
  • Results showed that qPCR detected a higher percentage of PCV13 serotypes compared to culture methods, indicating that these vaccine serotypes can still be present even after widespread immunization.

Accurate interatomic potentials were calculated for the interaction of a singly charged carbon cation, C, with a single rare gas atom, RG (RG = Ne-Xe). The RCCSD(T) method and basis sets of quadruple-ζ and quintuple-ζ quality were employed; each interaction energy was counterpoise corrected and extrapolated to the basis set limit. The lowest C() electronic term of the carbon cation was considered, and the interatomic potentials calculated for the diatomic terms that arise from these: Π and Σ Additionally, the interatomic potentials for the respective spin-orbit levels were calculated, and the effect on the spectroscopic parameters was examined.
