Lanolin alcohol is a high cholesterol containing naturally derived material used as a skin protectant in wound healing petrolatum-based ointments. It is a highly purified fraction of lanolin wool wax that has been identified as a possible cause of allergic contact dermatitis. This 3-center study enrolled 499 subjects who underwent a variety of in-office surgical procedures followed by application of a wound healing ointment containing lanolin alcohol without antibiotics.

PURPOSE: Ginkgo biloba extract (EGb 761) has been shown to facilitate behavioral and neuro-morphological recovery from brain injury, but less is known about its effects on glia. Since gliosis may be an important component of the recovery process, we tested the hypothesis that EGb 761 alters the time course and development of microglial activation and astrocytosis after brain injury. METHODS: Rats were treated with either saline or EGb 761 and killed at 2 hrs, 1, 3, 7, and 14 days following unilateral entorhinal cortex (EC) lesions.

Gacyclidine, a novel, noncompetitive NMDA receptor antagonist, was injected (i.v.) into rats at three different doses to determine if the drug could promote behavioral recovery and reduce the behavioral and anatomical impairments that occur after bilateral contusions of the medial frontal cortex (MFC).

We have analyzed the effect of severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) on the levels of mRNA expression of neurotrophic factors (NTFs): brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF), nerve growth factor (NGF), ciliary neurotrophic factor (CNTF) and their respective receptors: trkB, trkA and CNTFRalpha. The expression was examined in the region of the lesion as well as a region remote from the lesion at 12, 24, and 36 h following the injury. Our data suggest that after the brain injury, the expression of NGF and BDNF mRNAs were early, transiently and significantly upregulated while that of CNTF was a slow and less amplified response in both areas of the brain.

The first two cases of superior limbic keratoconjunctivitis occurring in identical twins are reported. In both cases the symptoms began 16 years ago and have never permanently responded to numerous topical medications or to bilateral resection of the superior bulbar conjunctiva.
