The complications of bleeding in patients with Waldenström's macroglobulinaemia (WM) are relatively well described. The pathophysiology of such a haemorrhagic diathesis is complex and involves the inhibition and depression of coagulation factors as well as qualitative and quantitative platelet abnormalities. Treatment of WM must be targeted at the underlying lymphocellular malignancy, but amelioration of the hyperviscous state and component transfusion(s) to correct abnormal coagulation parameters will decrease the incidence of bleeding.

Article Synopsis
  • The study examined how different heart cannulation techniques affect the speed of rewarming after cold cardioplegic arrest in dogs.
  • Researchers monitored heart temperatures with four techniques: total bypass, partial bypass, atrioventricular, and atrial cannulation, analyzing the data with a mathematical model.
  • Findings revealed that myocardial rewarming is non-uniform, with partial bypass being the quickest method, followed by atrioventricular cannulation, while the main heat sources were from the posterior heart areas and blood from the right side during partial bypass.

Early postoperative feeding with an elemental diet has been successful in elective gastrointestinal surgery. This study was undertaken to evaluate whether elemental feedings were feasible through a catheter jejunostomy in patients suffering massive abdominal and retroperitoneal injuries. Eight patients had a combination of hepatic, upper gastrointestinal, and pancreatic injuries.
