Article Synopsis
  • Increasing biological nitrogen fixation (BNF) in maize can lessen the environmental harm caused by synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, but high levels of reactive nitrogen in the rhizosphere hinder this process.
  • Researchers developed gene-edited strains of bacteria (Klebsiella variicola and Kosakonia sacchari) to enhance BNF and ammonium release in nitrogen-rich conditions.
  • Experiments showed that these engineered strains significantly boosted BNF activity and ammonium output, contributing an average of 21 kg of nitrogen per hectare to maize plants, thus potentially reducing reliance on synthetic fertilizers and improving crop yield stability.

This study describes the evaluation of the effectiveness of different soil covers on the development, productivity, yield and metabolic content of patchouli oil (Pogostemon cablin) and its hydrolate. The agronomic experiments were carried out in the field, including four types of soil cover and six replications (4 x 6), using green cover (peanut), straw (crotalaria and millet straw), white plastic cover, and no mulch (weeding). After transplanting, the initial growth of seedlings was analyzed through weekly monitoring of plant height, stem diameter, and the number of leaves.

Background: The lepromatous pole is a stigmatising prototype for patients with leprosy. Generally, these patients have little or no symptoms of peripheral nerve involvement at the time of their diagnosis. However, signs of advanced peripheral neuropathy would be visible during the initial neurological evaluation and could worsen during and after multidrug therapy (MDT).
