Study Objective: We aimed to characterize intra-operative mechanical ventilation with low or high positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) and recruitment manoeuvres (RM) regarding intra-tidal recruitment/derecruitment and overdistension using non-linear respiratory mechanics, and mechanical power in obese surgical patients enrolled in the PROBESE trial.

Design: Prospective, two-centre substudy of the international, multicentre, two-arm, randomized-controlled PROBESE trial.

Setting: Operating rooms of two European University Hospitals.

Background: Postoperative pulmonary complications (PPCs) increase the morbidity and mortality of surgery in obese patients. High levels of positive end-expiratory pressure (PEEP) with lung recruitment maneuvers may improve intraoperative respiratory function, but they can also compromise hemodynamics, and the effects on PPCs are uncertain. We hypothesized that intraoperative mechanical ventilation using high PEEP with periodic recruitment maneuvers, as compared with low PEEP without recruitment maneuvers, prevents PPCs in obese patients.

Aim: To investigate the efficacy of PET/CT with 11C-methionine for localizing parathyroid adenomas in patients with suspected primary hyperparathyroidism and inconclusive results of cervical ultrasonography and 99mTc-MIBI-SPECT/CT.

Patients, Method: Retrospective analysis of imaging data of 18 patients and correlation with clinical outcome, in particular intraoperative findings and histopathology of excised tissue.

Results: 12 of 18 patients received surgery.

Background: Amiodarone-induced thyrotoxicosis (AIT) should be included in differential diagnoses of thyrotoxicosis in presence of a suggestive drug history. Adequate treatment requires knowledge of the underlying type of AIT.

History And Admission Findings: A 68-year-old male was admitted because of progressive dyspnea and tachyarrhythmia.
