Purpose: To identify factors that influence the outcome of patients with severe infectious corneal ulcers.

Method: A retrospective review was performed of the hospital records of all such patients admitted to the Doheny Eye Hospital during a 30 month period. Outcome variables examined were change in visual acuity, duration of hospitalization, hospital charges, and percentage of patients who required penetrating keratoplasty.

Objective: Insulin-like growth factors (IGFs) exert stimulatory effects on follicular growth and development, and early embryogenesis. In view of this, we studied the effect of short-term estradiol treatment, as used in preparing the uterus for embryo implantation, on the serum concentrations of IGFs and their binding proteins (IGFBP) in patients with premature ovarian failure (POF).

Patients And Methods: Twenty-four patients with POF, enrolled in an assisted reproduction program, were treated with increasing doses of estradiol up to 8 mg daily for 6 weeks.

Purpose: Mini-radial keratotomy (mini-RK) involves limiting the extent of radial incisions to within 3.5 mm from the center of the central clear zone, compared with incisions that extend close to or beyond the limbus, as with "conventional" RK. This study was designed to determine if shorter incision length reduces the likelihood of corneal rupture after blunt trauma.

1. We characterized the basolateral membrane Cl- and K+ conductances of the dark-adapted chick neural retina-retinal pigment epithelium (RPE)-choroid preparation. Conventional microelectrodes were used to measure apical (V(ap)) and basolateral (Vba) membrane voltage, and double-barreled Cl- and K+ selective microelectrodes were used to follow the time course and magnitude of ion concentration changes outside the basolateral (basal) membrane.
