New-onset Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus Presenting as Bilateral Cataracts in a 15-year-old Girl.

Cataracts secondary to type 1 or type 2 diabetes are not uncommon in adults; however, they are a rare finding in pediatric patients with type 1 diabetes. A 15-year-old girl presented with progressively worsened bilateral vision for 6 months. Her vision rapidly deteriorated over the previous month, prompting further evaluation that found bilateral cataracts with haziness in all layers and swollen lenses.

The association between developmental delay and endophthalmitis after pediatric cataract surgery using an insurance claims database.

Purpose: To evaluate risk factors for postoperative endophthalmitis in pediatric cataract surgery based on an analysis of a large insurance claims database.

Methods: We retrospectively analyzed pediatric (0-18 years) cataract surgeries from the IBM MarketScan Research Database from 2004 to 2017. Suspect cases of endophthalmitis were identified by International Classification of Diseases codes; confirmed cases, by Current Procedural Terminology codes within 7 days of diagnosis.

Reflux hyphema from transient hypotony after Ozurdex® in eyes with prior GATT.

Purpose: To report on delayed-onset hyphema following intravitreal injection of dexamethasone implant Ozurdex® in eyes with a history of gonioscopy-assisted transluminal trabeculotomy (GATT).

Observations: We describe two cases of hyphema occurring within one day following Ozurdex® implantation in eyes that had undergone GATT at least one year prior. One case responded well to medical management, while the other required anterior chamber paracentesis for intraocular pressure (IOP) control.

Adoption and Use of Social Media Platforms by Ophthalmology Programs during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

 The aim of this study was to determine whether the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic influenced the presence of ophthalmology residency programs on social media platforms.  The presence of all accredited ophthalmology residency programs on Twitter and Instagram was assessed for January 2020 and August through March 2021 through an online search. The number of followers and posts per month during these periods was collected for each program.
