Arthroplasty with discectomy is a proven treatment for internal derangement of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ), however there is no consensus on the type of interpositional graft that should be used after the disc is removed. While an ideal graft should be easy to obtain and provide an adequate buffer between the articular surfaces, the authors suggest that it should also minimize donor site morbidity. This Technical Note highlights the technique for harvesting and utilizing the superficial musculoaponeurotic system (SMAS) as an interpositional graft.

The purpose of this study was to report the subjective and objective outcomes of temporomandibular joint (TMJ) replacement with Biomet stock prostheses at a single institution in Florida. In this retrospective study, patients who underwent TMJ replacement using a Biomet stock prosthesis from 2005 to 2012 were analyzed. Subjective (pain, diet) and objective (maximal incisal opening) information was obtained.
