Article Synopsis
  • There is growing interest in using point of care ultrasound (POCUS) as a teaching tool in medical courses, particularly for cardiac anatomy and physiology; however, few studies have explored team-based learning (TBL) approaches for this topic.
  • This study introduced a novel TBL exercise called Team-Based Learning - Ultrasound (TBL-US) for first-year medical students, comprising phases such as preparation, team readiness, image acquisition, and knowledge assessment, facilitated by trained second-year students.
  • Results showed significant improvements in students’ knowledge of cardiac POCUS and cardiovascular content, with enhanced final exam scores for TBL-US participants compared to non-participants, indicating that this method effectively supports learning in preclinical medical education.

Background: Previous studies have identified the reverse shock index x Glasgow Coma Scale (rSIG) as a tool for predicting the need for trauma intervention in pediatric patients. This study sought to investigate the utility of prehospital rSIG as a triage tool to predict the need for trauma-center level of care in a large pediatric cohort.

Methods: Data from the American College of Surgeons National Trauma Data Bank (NTDB) (2018-2020) were used.

Dyads can be challenging to recruit for research studies, but detailed reporting on strategies employed to recruit adult-adolescent dyads is rare. We describe experiences recruiting adult-youth dyads for a hypertension education intervention comparing recruitment in an emergency department (ED) setting with a school-based community setting. We found more success in recruiting dyads through a school-based model that started with adolescent youth (19 dyads in 7 weeks with < 1 hour recruitment) compared to an ED-based model that started with adults (2 dyads in 17 weeks with 350 hours of recruitment).

Initiatives of artisanal fisheries co-management and the construction of differentiated markets for seafood products have been emerging in different parts of the world, as an institutionalized way of coping with a global fishery crisis. This paper analyses some institutionalization processes of artisanal mollusc fisheries, considering the role of co-management in two Brazilian and Italian protected areas (Resex Pirajubaé and Conero Regional Park). Within a theoretical framework aiming at moving beyond the dualism between nature and society, the methodology of multiple-case-study has been used to carry on research about mollusc artisanal fisheries co-management networks in their constitution and development.

Little is known about the effects of malnutrition rates in the long-run. Applying the methodology recommended by the World Health Organization, this study estimates stunting rates for Argentine adult males from the 1850s to the 1950s. We use five large samples of army recruits, prison inmates, militiamen, and electoral records totaling 84,500 cases.
