Disabled People or Their Support Persons' Perceptions of a Community Based Multi-Sensory Environment (MSE): A Mixed-Method Study.

Multi-sensory environments (MSEs) are specialised spaces purposely designed to stimulate the senses, whilst providing a calming and relaxing environment for leisure and enjoyment, predominantly intended for disabled people. Most MSEs are in institutions, hospitals, or educational settings, with a few in community-based settings. We explored disabled users' experiences of a community based MSE in a large metropolitan area in New Zealand, with a view to expanding access to MSE-type environments within the area.

Orthopaedic residents demonstrate retention of point of care ultrasound knowledge after a brief educational session: a quasi experimental study.

Background: Musculoskeletal point of care ultrasound (MSK POCUS) has many uses for orthopaedic surgeons, but orthopaedic trainees are rarely exposed to this modality. The purpose of this project was to assess the usefulness in clinical education of a newly implemented MSK POCUS course in an orthopaedic surgery program.

Methods: An MSK POCUS course for orthopaedic surgery residents was developed by an interdisciplinary team.

Hyperconjomer stereocontrol of cationic polyene cyclisations.

Polyene cyclisations are a powerful method for the direct generation of molecular complexity. This paper describes the use of computational methods to investigate the stereoselectivity of cationic polyene cyclisations of geranylbenzene derivatives. The outcomes highlight the different reactivity of hyperconjomers during the key Friedel-Crafts alkylation step, and informed a successful strategy for the synthesis of (±)-taiwaniaquinone G with improved levels of stereoselectivity.

Genomic Analysis of Cardiac Surgery-Associated Mycobacterium chimaera Infections, United States.

A surgical heater-cooler unit has been implicated as the source for Mycobacterium chimaera infections among cardiac surgery patients in several countries. We isolated M. chimaera from heater-cooler units and patient infections in the United States.

In the spring of 2015, investigators in Switzerland reported a cluster of six patients with invasive infection with Mycobacterium chimaera, a species of nontuberculous mycobacterium ubiquitous in soil and water. The infected patients had undergone open-heart surgery that used contaminated heater-cooler devices during extracorporeal circulation (1). In July 2015, a Pennsylvania hospital also identified a cluster of invasive nontuberculous mycobacterial infections among open-heart surgery patients.
