Management of the coronary-subclavian steal syndrome with balloon angioplasty. A case report and review of the literature.

A fifty-two-year-old woman with angina pectoris due to coronary-subclavian steal syndrome through a left internal mammary artery graft placed distal to a left anterior descending artery stenosis is presented. Retrograde flow through the mammary artery graft due to severe left subclavian stenosis was observed angiographically. Accordingly, left subclavian balloon angioplasty was performed, restoring normal antegrade flow through the internal mammary artery graft and resulting in resolution of the patient's symptoms.

Candida albicans purulent pericarditis treated successfully without surgical drainage.

Cures of Candida pericarditis reported in the literature uniformly involved surgical drainage of the pericardial space. We report a patient with purulent pericarditis caused by Candida albicans who was treated successfully with antifungal chemotherapy combined with a single pericardiocentesis that did not completely evacuate the pericardial space. This case indicates that thoracotomy with surgical drainage of the pericardium is not mandatory for successful therapy of Candida pericarditis.

Response of total tannins and phenolics in loblolly pine foliage exposed to ozone and acid rain.

Tannin and total phenolic levels in the foliage of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda L.) were examined in order to evaluate the effect of atmospheric pollution on secondary plant metabolism. The trees were exposed to four ozone concentrations and three levels of simulated acid rain.

Identification of persons at risk for sudden cardiac death.

Before any more progress is made in reducing the incidence of sudden cardiac death, our ability to identify those at risk must be refined further. The close association with coronary artery disease necessitates that the first step must be the identification of those with underlying coronary artery disease. This is underscored by the disturbing fact that, in many, sudden death is the first sign of coronary disease.
